May 1st is probably ideal this year with the cold weather we've had but during a warm spring like we had last year or the year before the stuff in the woods hardens off then your newly sprouted food plot is the only prime tender vegetation.

The vegetation in the woods doesn't get unpalatable until on into the later part of June and July. I plant early May every year, never had a problem with frost, or with deer hammering my plots, that early.
