I’ve used ammonia with dogs that liked to get into trash cans
Just put a soup can on top or inside the trash can and when the ammonia is spilled the super sensitive nose will burn and eyes will water
Job done Ammonia seems to work for me. We’ve had bears get into our can a couple of times, but I started throwing a cardboard box on top of the garbage and pouring ammonia on the box. Haven’t had any problems in a couple of years. I bought ammonia at Lowes this morning. $2 a bottle. That's going in there today.
