I hunt them the same exact way, as I do any time after fly down. On large tracts or public, I cover a lot of ground and use aggressive cuts/yelps to locate.

On small tracts, I carefully poke into places I expect there to be a bird, & use some aggressive cuts/yelps to locate. And if I don’t strike one, I go home, go to another place, or find a comfy spot where I can hear well and try them again in an hour.


Left work at 3:15 yesterday. Struck him at 3:45, dead at 3:50.

On days like today, I enjoy going to a high spot where you can hear a long way and simply listening. When I hear one fire up, I head that way. Been my most effective afternoon strategy over the years.
