Hugo Black, the SC Justice the federal building is named after, was a “member” of the klan.

He also renounced his membership (which he had to have to get elected in Alabama) long before he was appointed to the court and was in fact a fairly liberal justice.

But, the point is true. There was a time in the 1920-30s that if you wanted to be successful in politics you had to be a member.
