If you hit him back, resist the urge to go after him until he has had a full 8 hours to die. 2, 4, or 6 hours is NOT enough on a gut shot deer with a bow. He won't go far at all until he lays down. Just be patient, slip out quietly in the opposite direction, and the odds are really good you won't need a tracking dog. Good luck! Solid advice. Sounds like a great deer.
