There's the upper echelon which is expected to be in the playoffs and if they aren't it's going to be a bad season.... these teams are currently Bama, Clemson, OSU, Oklahoma and Georgia. There's the high tier which is a whole lot of teams but they're expected to get records between 8-11 win seasons and can beat any given team on any given day..... these teams are Florida, LSU, USC, Oregon, Texas, Michigan, Michigan State, Texas A&M, etc. There's mid tier which is even more teams. These teams are usually pretty good but currently have coaches on the hot seat, still have the talent to be able to beat folks but aren't currently developing it, or are teams in bad markets that just can't recruit that well. They're expected records are going to hover around .500 and if they get bowl eligible it will be a good season. These are teams like Auburn, Ole Miss, Memphis, TCU, Northwestern, Iowa, UCLA, Nebraska, etc. The fourth tier is everybody else and Boise State.

If the fans don't realize this then they're delusional.
