They celebrate Juneteenth instead. Sorry you missed it. You'll have to wait 11 months now.

For those that aren't familiar, Juneteenth is celebrated on a day in the middle of June which is the approximate time that word reached the outer stretches of the slave states of the Emancipation Proclamation. Since it didn't happen on one particular date, just a general date is used. The celebration began in Texas as this was one of the more distant slave states. From a Black person's perspective, you can understand how this can be an independence day for them, however I know plenty that hold the 4th dear also. Many of those, not surprisingly, served in the military and are as patriotic as anyone.
