I've shot two elk, one with a 7mm wby and the other with a 35 whelen. Both worked, as I'm sure your 45-70 will. The few guys that I've know that are serious elk hunters tend to lean towards a 338. One guy uses a 340 wby. I'm probably not and won't ever be serious elk hunter material but if I was shooting a 340wby, I would want a muzzle brake and ear plugs. Back in the day I owned a few Roy's. The 340 ain't too bad in a Mark V. I heard the .240 hits like Thor’s hammer on deer. I would imagine the same for the 340 and elk. I didn't see the shot, but was sitting around the campfire that evening and heard the guide tell the story. He was quite impressed with the 340 Roy on elk.
Sig Sauer, to hell and back reliable.
Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.
Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?
