When they flew over we knocked the drake down right in front of us, but the hen was able to fly off before it fell into a thick cutover across the swamp. We didn't really think about it until we started looking at the drakes head and noticed how his coloration wasn't normal. We sent pictures of him to people that we thought might know and got a wide range of opinions. One guy told us to try to find the hen that was flying with him to see if that might give us a better idea of what kind of duck he was. After the hunt, I took my dog over there and let him do the rest. Somehow by the grace of god he found the hen 200 yards from the edge of the swamp in a part of the thicket I wasn't even going to try to walk into. To be honest with you, I was more excited to see how well my dog worked that morning than I was to kill those two ducks. But I will admit that it was pretty exciting when my taxidermist told me that he thought they were both hybrids and then later got it confirmed by a biologist. Is it common for hybrids to fly together like that? I don't know anyone that has killed any that might know.
