Funding for mental health facilities has been slashed by legislatures in almost all states.

It's one area where "we want less government" is being implemented. The judicial system also has issues with this when it has mentally ill inmates who need psych treatment but cannot get said inmate into a psych facility due to lack of beds. Overcrowded in the few, existing psych facilities along with overcrowded jails and prisons. So the mentally ill inmate has to stay in the jail or prison.

But I agree with you. The mental health situation in the U.S. is a serious problem.
