Hot water heater is in the garage. At first, having it upstairs was awesome but then you start thinking about the potential disasters that could happen and cost thousands to repair. $900 doesn't sound bad, but 3k sounds horrible you said guess,,, so I guessed bro... being that the water heater is in the garage should save you some money,,,
