Walk me through what you guys are doing up to actually making the set for coyotes with foothold traps.... Meaning, I got traps, we can discuss that on the other thread which ones are best....

2) wash them at the car wash

1) dip and wax (using Speed dip or boiling/waxing, etc.) Don't have to go into a lot of detail, just what is working for you i.e. the short version. There's lot of info on this on the web since everyone argues over which prep is better.

What I'm wondering about most is scent control from that point up to where I'm going to make my set.

2) How are you getting to the set with scent control...driving up on a 4-wheeler, walking in rubber boots, etc. If you are setting on dirt or a dirt road are you covering your tracks somehow? Dragging anything along for trailing?

3) Are you wearing hip boots to kneel down or using some type of mat at the set, squatting, etc.. How important is that aspect.

4) Best method for keeping your rubber gloves scent free since I assume you are handling everything with them. Carrying everything up to the set in a trapping basket, 5 gallon bucket, etc.

That's probably enough for this thread... We'll move on to making the set afterwards, but this is the kind of stuff I don't find a lot of info on and I need to know about. I am good with a snare (illegal in AL) and have some basic idea of this stuff... but this foothold business is a lot more iffy in my opinion, messy and harder work with ultimately fewer sets, thus less room for error... I'm not into breaking laws... So I guess I'm going to have to learn something new if I'm gonna get him to stick his nose in a dirt hole.

You read about this stuff and most make it sound like you need to handle everything and wear a HASMAT suit from the time you take the trap out of the box until you leave the set and get back to your truck.

Ok. Im back. Put new traps in dishwasher,Carwash, or boiling water. Main thing is get the factory oil of them. For almost 20 years I used walnut die and wax. I know use Formula 1 trap kote. 1 part dip 2 parts water. Its like a rubbery laytex pant when it dries. IT coats AND deoderizes traps. Scent control= Nothing you can do will keep a coyote from knowing you have beeb their. Just like with deer hunting TRY to keep your scent down. Rubber boots is what lots of people will tell you to wear. Quess what? I have caught 100s of coyotes wearing tennis shoes and I use a kneeing pad from F&T trading post. Forget drags!! They will get you bite buy a coyote! rofl I mainly use Fox Hollow stakes. Gloves I use a rubber coated pair of gloves for making dirt hole sets. Then I use a set of workmans leather gloves to put bait in hole or handle lure. DO NOT GET THEM MIXED UP! Keep you Lure, urine, and bait in a bucket with a lid. Keep you tools in another bucket. DONT CROSS CONTAMINATE THEM! I use 5 gallon buckets with lids. Dont spit tobacco, comb your hair, scracth yourself, or touch anything bare handed at your sets. Make them and get out. GoatKiller. Trapping is a dying art. Feel free to PM me anytime you need help. IF your willing to drive-up to say ASHVILLE exit on I-59 . I would be glad to let you ride along on the trap line with me any time you want. I will even let you set afew traps! thumbup

When I get some stuff out and together I'll make a new thread on dirt hole sets....

I'll get one of those kneeling pads. I thought it was odd they look like they are made of closed cell foam and then I've read others that say you need to wear rubber hippers for scent control kneeling, etc.

I'll try Formula 1. I still have a couple doz. traps in with most in good enough shape that should clean up...

I'll go 2 buckets and 2 sets of gloves as well.

Yea, If I can't catch one I'll hit you up and take a ride. I am from up there so I'm around a good bit. I just had too many dug up to keep going with it back when I tried this before.

Dug-up. 90% of the time that from an unstable trap. You might want to concider a trappers cap. A trapper cap = is a tool that covers the pan. That way you can pack the jaws of the trap firmly so trap doesnt wobble. ITS better to have 12 traps that dont wobble than 4 dozen traps that do.

This is a good possibility I figured it was because they smelled me or at one point I think I used speed dip and gas at someone's recommendation and thought the traps smelled like tar long after they were dry.

I will study up on bedding firmly and get the tool.

Go to F&T Trading Post online . You can see one on their website. Gasoline and coleman lantern fuel based dips would not be what I would use at all. That stuff is hard to get stripped off a trap too.

I like what you are saying about the unstable trap. I don't think you can beat a coyote's nose no matter what you do. This year I am trying to work a lot harder on getting the trap packed in and stable. I'll see how it goes!

Also, if I wore hip boots I would be wore out just from getting up and down and trying to work in them if making very many sets at all.

You are correct. I dont think you can fool coyotes nose. But the amount of scent you leave behind can keep you from catching coyote right away. I trap from the truck. Most of my friends trap from there trucks. 2 many times I see guys going back and forth to the truck to get something they forgot. Think about the amount of scent you putting down with unessary trips back and forth??? Make you set, and get out as fast as you can AND you will catch coyotes sooner as opposed to days latter! thumbup
