Shaw, I guess I would be considered an old codger by some standards. Let me put it this way, I tried bow hunting when I was younger, killed a few and kinda lost interest. Just to let you know how old, at the Time, a Bear Whitetail II was considered a good bow. Two young whipper snappers and myself have leased a little land in Ky. They have a short gun season, but long bow season and pretty long crossbow season. Don't know about getting another bow, but thought about a xbow. I have read a little but not an expert. Don't want to spend to much and not stay with it. But of all I have read, thinking about buying a lower end Excalibur, if you can call it lowend. Would like to hear your thoughts and opinions. Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about crossbows at all, never even fired one. A friend of mine shoots an older Horton. Sounds like a .22mag going off, but he kills a few deer every year with it. He's an old codger also. He's 69 years old and can climb a tree faster than a squirrel. From hearing everyone talk, the Excaliburs are good crossbows.
Don't rule out a compound though. Go to your nearest shop and shoot a few. They've come a loooong way since the Whitetail II's.

Will do, got pretty accurate with older stuff. I don't have the stamina I used to ,smoked to much when I was younger ,but I am 6'1" about 220 and still bench about 250. I figure I can pull maybe 70 lbs. I think I will follow your advice and see. What is a realistic distance you can kill one with a compound now Shaw. I know 35 yds used to be long.

You can kill a deer just as dead with a 50 lb. compound if your old brittle bones can pull it back. With the new bows of today, you will probably shoot just as fast an arrow with 50 lb draw as that old bear 2 at 70 lbs and it will be much easier to draw and hold. Good luck. Now let's see more pics of that corvette! If you get a crossbow, you're gonna have to sell that corvette and get a minivan!

Foldme, Don't have that one anymore, sold it a few years back, I have had 4 ,buy em ragged and restore them. I got a 79 right now I finished last year. I guess they are like dope, addictive.Only sold one I ever regretted. Would be worth a lot if I had kept it, but I was young and dumb and u know the rest of the story. It was a 67 with a 427 fuel injected 4 speed ,they used to call em rat motors. Black with red leather interior, thinking about is better than Viagra if u get my drift. That sumbitch would literally fly.I wiil get some up of the one I got now soon. Put a crate motor in it, turning about 365 horse. Range will just depend on your ability. With today's bows it doesn't take as much skill level to be as accurate as with the older bows. Under the right circumstances (calm wind, known yardage and a calm deer) I won't hesitate to take a 50 yard shot at one. I've killed quite a few in the 45 to 50 yard range with my longest being 52 yards. I've killed squirrels at 56 yards before. Before my treestand accident I used to shoot a lot of tournaments. I've pretty much retired from it for now because I can't hold out to practice like I used to. But because of all of the things I've learned over the years shooting tournaments, I can hold good groups in a softball sized target out to 50 yards with minimal practice a week. Being able to consistently hit quarter sized targets at 50 yards ain't that easy without lots of practice. As Foldemup said, you don't need to pull 70#. Today's bows are a lot more efficient. I pull 62#.

If you get a chance read through the bow kill thread from this past season and look at some of the kill distances. Lot of folks folks killing them at distances over 40 yards. Personally, I like 'em under 30 yards and no closer than 20 yards.

I've always had my bows set at 70lbs until this past season. Shaw turned mine down to 65lbs. I have no intensions of ever going back to 70lbs. It's so much easier to draw and hold it at 65lbs. I killed a doe at 45yds this year with it.

My monster bow that I shoot tournaments and hunt with is shooting 286fps at 56# and a lot quieter than a crossbow. Crossbows on average are loud and, unless you get the higher end ones, don't shoot any faster than most bows. Deer at 40yds can usually react to the sound of a crossbow or loud compound and be out of the way of the arrow before it gets to them. Quiet, not speed, is where the killing power is. Killed this one this year at 56yds. Killed this one last year in illinios at 53yds. Killed this one in 07 at 67yds Bows can be effective killing machines at ranges past 40yds. You just have to practice, know the yardage, and be confident in your equipment.

Yes indeed...It would be nice if the bow manufacturers would have decibel levels posted along with the IBO speed in their advertisements. I guess quiet is just not as sexy, but it is the great equalizer in hunting bows.

I have a Mathews Switchback XT and I also have a Parker Terminator crossbow. I have to practice with the Mathews to stay on top of my game with it. With the crossbow, I just sight the scope in each year come season and never have to practice a single time with it. With the bow I have to practice to be accurate, but with the crossbow I do not have to practice to be accurate out to 40 yards. At 40 yards and no practice, the crossbow will shoot dots out all day long. I can't do that with the Mathews unless I practice a lot to keep the perfect form. Just my opinion, but the crossbow is not any better than a regular bow if you will just practice.
I can't stand a thief.
