I've used alfalfa bales and chaffhaye for years. The alfalfa is messy with a lot of waste. The chaffhaye is almost all consumed. It prolly will take a while to get deer started on it, I'd put some in with the corn/pellets at first to get em trying it. Works as a supplement in stress periods, with high protein. Keep it dry. Don't worry about the white mold looking stuff on the chaffhaye it's not mold.

alfalfa hay bale feeder

I added a tray under the hay to catch crumbles and reduce wastage later on...

I've never heard of Chaffhaye. What kind of price, and did the local stores up there have to special order the stuff?

Chaffhaye is a packaged alfalfa block, I'd call it wet packed. 50# bag is around $12-15 in Columbiana. Can be hard to find locally. Marketed as a horse feed, a lot of deer farmers have started using it because it is cost effective because of no waste.

I've used it for maybe five years, used alfalfa bales for five years before switching. I don't feed it all year, mostly at stress times as a supplement for green high protein feed.

gotta be careful with alfalfa hay bales and get primo stuff with small stems to reduce wastage.

A little rice bran over the top will get them going on it pretty quick.

Not it's not the same as cubes 2dogs it's a compressed bale not a range cube type feed. Troy I have covered troughs that are well established feed stations I figure I'll introduce them to it with corn. My mineral sites are right beside the troughs so it's a one stop shop!

No, this stuff comes in a 24"X24x24" cube in plastic wrap. Alafalfa is moist, not dry like cubes.

I'm thinkin' about building a couple of feeders simular to the one pictured. I wanta build mine
at the house. I wanta put them on skids and move them with the tractor / loader with pallet forks.

That looks good. At 12-15 dollars a bail. How long on average will 1 bail last?

Mine picked at it for a week er so, took em a while to finish the first one. After that it wouldn't last a week. Good thing is there is almost no waste, unlike with alfalfa bales.

So is chaffhay, the same thing as alfalfa silage?
