Ever since that flash hunt that I had about 10 days ago, I've been screwing up. I drove down to hunt this morning. I had one bird gobbling and he was on the other side of the property on the property line. He was hot and was gobbling hard. I got down to the hardwoods that he was in and he gobbled right when I got to the hardwoods. He sounded to me like he was a good 300 yards away, so I eased about 100 yards or so and just sat down. I grabbed my slate and called to him and nothing. He had just all of a sudden shut up and I thought he may be coming. All of a sudden I hear him fly down and he is literally 10 yards away still In the tree. That dang turkey saw me sit down and grab my calls and everything and just watched. That's the 3rd time in two hunts that I've gotten way to close and bumped a bird. I'm just having the hardest time telling how far they are away with all these leaves on the trees. The woods are so thick and these birds seem much farther away than they actually are. I got back on him at about 830 and got to close again. I was frustrated to say the least. I'm tired of getting to close and scaring these birds. I guess I need to be more patient, but my sense of distance and sound has just changed so much with how thick everything is!

I had no idea. It amazed me to be honest. If I would have looked up I could have limb launched his sorry butt. I mean he had to see it all. Maybe he will die this weekend.

Yeah, the leaves being on trees you have to adjust to. Throw a ridge or two and a 5-15 mph wind in there and it makes it real tough. The good thing is, this time of year birds normally gobble pretty good, so yes, be patient and walk slow. Good luck, and there's no better way to learn than from your own mistakes!
