We went ahead and planted seven acres of corn and cow peas this past weekend in Macon County. With the cool weather we are expecting tonight will that have a big impact on our germination rate? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You might lose the peas. Cool temps and they won't sprout, just lay there in the cool dirt and rot.

Thanks, I guess we'll know in a couple of weeks for sure. Mother Nature is really unpredictable.

Never understood why anyone would plant before May 1st. Whats the hurry? You want enough food for the deer in the woods, so they don't hammer your food plots early.

I had one weekend available in the next four weeks and looked at the weather channel ap and worst case looked like 40 one night. I rolled the dice but may get burned. Our place is extremely sandy and doesn't stay wet very long so really wanted to try and get plants established before the droughts hit. Keeping my fingers crossed.

May 1st is probably ideal this year with the cold weather we've had but during a warm spring like we had last year or the year before the stuff in the woods hardens off then your newly sprouted food plot is the only prime tender vegetation.

thumbup No need to plant corn for deer early like a farmer does for harvest.

The vegetation in the woods doesn't get unpalatable until on into the later part of June and July. I plant early May every year, never had a problem with frost, or with deer hammering my plots, that early.
