I hate wearing a coat and tie. I haven't owned a suit in probably 12-13 years. I wore a sports coat to my uncle's funeral several weeks back and hated every minute of it. Before that, I hadn't worn one in over a year and that was to another funeral. I was going to surprise my wife for Easter by buying myself a new sports coat, as she really likes me to wear one. Well, I go in the store today, which I haven't been in a store that would even carry sports coats in years, to see what they have. Holy Moly!!! Man are they proud of those things!! I wouldn't even try one on. Everything they had either looked like something my 72 year old dad would wear or something a girlie boy would wear. No way am I wearing one. Guess it'll be just a button up shirt for me again this year. I've told my wife she better not even bury me in one of those monkey suits.

Go to Steinmart or Burlington. They have them for reasonable prices. I had to buy my brother and my youngest son suits for my wedding. Was able to get them at Burlington for under $250 total and they looked fine. Just go with a navy blue blazer, white shirt, and khaki pants. Looks sharp and won't bust the wallet.
Go ahead and get one, man. It ain't gonna kill ya to suit up for Easter and make her happy!

I own somewhere around 10-12 suits. I hear ya. I could almost open a men's store with the stuff I have. I bet I have 75+ ties. I don't know. I feel just a comfortable in a suit as I do in jeans or camo. Dr. B

The only down side to wearing suits is the dry cleaner bill.

I don't own a suit and I don't want to own one. I have a couple pairs of dress pants and button up shirts. I'm sure there's a tie or two in the closet somewhere.

I hate dressing up as much as anyone, but everyone MAN should have a coat suit and tie to wear to important events. Just my opinion. And I know what they say about opinions. One charcoal gray suit, one white LONG sleeve button down shirt, one tie that matches the suit, black shoes and socks. Won't set you back that much, and it will last a LONG time wearing it twice a year.

Time and place for everything.
Some places call for a suit and tie, or sport coat and nice slacks with good shoes.
Being appropriate, respectful, professional and looking nice isn't a bad thing.

A good overalls 'n white shirt funeral would be nice, and a fried chicken dinner afterward. Sounds like a good idea.
I have no respect for any man or boy who wears a hat or cap during a church service. That's some bad raisin' if you don't remove it.
Talk all you want about "God don't care how you look" or whatever, but not removing your hat/cap in a church (or building, for that matter) and especially during the service is terrible.

I used to always wear a suit to a funeral. I guess I still would but it seams khakis and a dress shirt is acceptable now. The last time I wore a suit to a funeral I felt extremely uncomfortable and overdressed. The last funereal I went to I was going wear a suit but the gf told me not too. I did not argue! Some things will never be ok to me. Shorts at a funeral is one of them.

"Casual Friday" with khakis or jeans was one thing among others in the downfall to a lot of today's men's style issues regarding suits, ties and apparel.

There was a time that even a farmer wore a suit to Church or to the Bank. America has become way to casual.
Men used to wear hats, not caps, and they took them off when they went inside or ate. My grandmother would slap the hat of anyone she saw sitting down at a table to eat with their hat on.
Crap, most people don't even wash their hands before they eat anymore.
Women wore dresses and hats to church.
People had respect for each other.
Everyone is talking about how things used to be, how you used to make a deal with a handshake. Well, I will submit to you that casual dress and the, "I will not dress up for anything" is another example of the downfall of America.

I have a couple of nice suits and a couple of sports coats. Plenty of ties and dress shirts. Wear the suits/coats on Sunday 50% of the time, to formal events, special occasions, weddings/funerals, and to court as needed.
On ties. I'd rather not wear one and I often just wear dress slacks and a sportcoat without a tie to church.
As a bigger guy, the key to me in feeling comfortable is to have a correct fitting dress shirt with extra room in the neck. Adding a tie then is not a big deal on discomfort. A coat and pants are not restrictive at all. No different than jeans and a jacket. If it fits well it is comfortable no matter what you wear.

Go get a basic blue blazer at Belk or Men's Wearhouse. $150-200 bucks and never goes out of style. I bet Belk has an Easter sale going on where you can get it for less. Edit: Belk has a 60% off sportscoats sale going on. Blue blazers from $80 (store brand)-$149 (Nautica)-$200 (Hilfiger/Ralph Lauren)

You take your hat off when you go inside academy or somewhere like that? Nope. Actually, proper manners would be to only take your hat off when eating or entering a person's home or office. A public building it is perfectly except able to wear a hat. Except a church. Now, if I am wearing a hat. I don't take it off anywhere but to eat. People now would look at you like you were crazy if you took it off when you came into their house. I can't believe anyone would wear one to church.

I bought a navy blazer and a lighter color sport coat at Belk last year. They were running a sale and I got both (Ralph Lauren) for $200 and change. I can't remember the time of year it was, I think it was June. I suspect they arent cheap right here at Easter because everyone is trying to get one for service.......and most folks aren't getting any smaller.

I am younger and I do not own a suit. But I always wear a button up (Tucked in) and nice khakis to a funeral or wedding. I hate seeing people my age wearing bluejeans/shorts to events like that. That is VERY disrespectful IMO.

Props to you, buck_buster, and double-props for tucking in the shirt. Just how my parents and grandparents taught me, and I am glad. Watching you all reply to a lot of stuff shows me I was brought up right.

It is respectful to wear a suit or sport coat with a tie to funerals, special occasions, such as weddings, etc. No hats in church. I have had a talk with a couple of young boys wearing hats in church, but I did it without talking down to them. Some of them just have no idea what respect is.

I hate dressing up as much as anyone, but everyone should have a coat and tie to wear to important events. You can get a decent one for under 100$ and if you only wear it a couple times a year it will last a long time. It is sad that I have been to a couple of young peoples funerals in the last few years and see kids wearing shorts, or ball caps, or t shirts to funerals. Never saw that until the last few years. You ain't seen nuthin till you've been to a funeral in Cullman County.

I only wear them to funerals I'm a pallbearer in. When I die I want everyone in normal clothes drinking cold beer they can cremate me and throw me in a pretty hardwood bottom and I'll be good.

I just don't get it. I swear all my suits feel as good as my camo clothes or my jeans. I have all my suits altered so they fit that way. I've never had a suit fit right straight off the rack. And I swear nothing, and I mean nothing feels as good as a well fitting suit. If you ever get one, you will know what I mean. If the suit fits right, you shouldn't even realize you're wearing one. A tie shouldn't be so tight you can't breath or feel constricted. It's all a matter of getting the right size. That means looking for numbers for the neck and sleeve length instead of just capital letters. Dr. B

Great post, Doc, and you're right. When I die I want everyone in normal clothes drinking cold beer they can cremate me and throw me in a pretty hardwood bottom and I'll be good.
Would be nice if more folks did this with a pot of gumbo and good friends and avoided all the tear-jerking, and indeed had a celebration of life instead of "My Eye Is On The Sparrow" being wailed by leisure-suit Larry standing over a $2,700 casket.

In my opinion, if you get a dress shirt that fits good, especially in the neck and arm length it goes a long ways towards making you feel more comfortable. Most country boys like me don't have a "normal" size neck and it ain't going to button up top without a hell of a fight. I don't mind wearing suits and sports coats, but I'll spend a little extra and make sure they fit and have the store custom fit them like Doc said above. Makes a huge difference.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

Just my opinion. And I know what they say about opinions.
One charcoal gray suit, one white LONG sleeve button down shirt, one tie that matches the suit, black shoes and socks.
Won't set you back that much, and it will last a LONG time wearing it twice a year. X2 I went hog wild and added a light blue shirt and another tie to that formula. Got a pair of black socks, black dress shoes, and a black dress belt. Job interviews, weddings and funerals. Retired now, so no more interviews, but too many funerals. I used to run with a fast crowd--live hard, die young.

I have at least a hundred ties and probably 14 suits and assorted combos with sport coats. It is expected in the ministry. Not always farmer. My preacher only wears ties to funerals and weddings. He always wears a sports coat or suit. Just no tie.
