I think it is Pearl millet! I'm going to plant several acres of each this year and see how they react to it!

I'm planning to plant RR corn, proso millet, and some kind of grain sorghum. Might try a few sunflowers too, though deer have always destroyed them in past.

I'll plant strips of each in the same field, but was thinking of mixing them all together in a strip to see how they would do. Anyone ever tried this?

I'm thinking the millet will take over and shade the ground to keep weeds down, but the corn will eventually tower over everything else and reduce available sunlight. Probably another one of my bad ideas.

PCP,

I would stay away from mixing them together and just plant them in separate rows. You can probably make it work but you had better not use too much seed. When we planted sorghum last year you couldn't even see the ground after it was about 2 feet tall. This would have most likely choked out the millet. Our corn would have done the same thing once it was about 4 feet tall. I remember we planted the corn at 35 lbs/acre using a broadcast spreader. I don't remember the seeding rate we used on the sorghum but it was thick. Our plan was to bush hog the millet before the shoot and leave the corn and sorghum standing for the shooters that were out in the field away from the edges. It didn't work very well because the hogs moved in and leveled the sorghum and corn before the shoot. We are just going back to strips of millet this year.

We always plant sunflowers in late June and they're always eaten up by opening day.

Thanks for the info and the warning!

I planted RR corn by itself last year and only used 20 lb per acre and thought that was too heavy. I've always used 10 lb/acre when planting in rows, but I just broadcast the RR corn. I got it a little too thick by doing it that way; I'm thinking I'll try 15 lbs per acre this year.

If I decide to mix in the millet, I'll probably cut back to 10 lbs of corn. I haven't planted any grain sorghum in years; sounds like it doesn't need to be planted too heavy either.

Thanks again for the info!

I'm confused. Doesn't the burning, burn the seed up after its bush hogged down? What does the burning do?

Burning actually cleans up some of the ground clutter from bush hogging and makes the seeds easier to find!

That or else they just like their seeds toasted! Lol!

What kind of pre-emergent can be used with sunflowers? Does it need to be disked in? I've never used any, and have had a problem with grass.

Dual is the go-to for pre-emerge on sunflowers. Might also mix in a little spartan. Spray before a rain.

Volunteer will work on grasses post-emerge.

Of course an initial burndown of gly and 2,4D about a month prior to planting is a good start as well.
