Interesting. I currently have an ag tag on my truck and I tow pretty big throughout the year at random times, did not realize that may not be kosher. Hell, the tractor with bucket and Bush hog attached plus trailer is almost 12,000lbs. Looks like I'll be inquiring about a farm tag in August.

Brian c brought up a good point the laws the law. You also brought up a good point that the government and the courts don't always follow the law. so why not do it, and know that you followed the law. Ive seen cops try to right tickets for farm tags too. Pretty much anything you do that's different draws attention from cops.

Thanks for the replies ... one of the reasons that got me to ask is that I had a buddy pulled over towing a 12k gooseneck for a moving violation a while back.
Cop informed him during the stop that his regular tag was only good for 8000# and that he could also be ticketed for not having the proper tag on his truck.
My buddy failed to inquire what the "proper tag" was supposed to be.. truck wasnt used for anything commercial and he voiced that to the cop and he told him it wasnt about anything commercial it was about a improper tag.
My buddy still tows just as before and never worried about changing his tag.

Know I dont want a X1 tag... its for a commercial vehicle and costs more than a regular tag. Only other tag Ive ever noticed was like a F1 farm tag... which covers up to 30k.
I called 2 DMV offices and asked them what the "proper" tag to have was and neither of the ladies could answer.

Going to try and catch a DOT trooper before I go register and tag the truck and see what they say.

Why was he pulled over??

I have had over 20,000 on the trailer a bunch of times behind 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Never have been pulled over... just lucky I guess smile

With an x1 tag you'd have to have a health card and run log books.

Have a health card already for work... X1 tag vs regular tag the cost is downfall and I dont need to run a commercial tag since im not a commercial vehicle.
