Gonna sell the crossbow and buy a bow, figure shooting it in the afternoons will help my ADD a little bit when I'm bored. What I need is a reccomendation on a decent entry level bow, looking for $400 range. I would do a used bow as well but know nothing about them, including wtf I should be looking for when holding one (other than arras and a string).

Check archerytalk and there used bows. I'm a hoyt guy put a Mathew switchback switchback xt or an S2 are good quite bows and should come in under that range. Hoyt turbo hawk is a nice bow for the money.

Go get a bowtech assassin. It is bowtech's entry level bow and you can get one with a quiver, sights, rest, stabilizer, string loop, and peep brand new for 600 bucks. It's called the r.a.k. package. Ready aim kill. I bought one last year and its the best bow I have ever owned. It's light, short, blazing fast, and accurate.

That might work. Talking to TC I think I will need a 30' draw though.

If y'all go to get that bow in Heflin send me a pm and y'all can come by the house and shoot it and we can grill some stuff and drink a couple of cold ones before y'all go back home. I'm about 30 minutes from Heflin.

I was just going to tell you to pick it up and bring it to me, so much for that idea.

That is a smoking deal on everything you'll need to get started up hunting with a bow.

As for what you need to look for. When I look for a bow, I look for a bow that is short and maneuverable, light, fast( over 300 feet per second IBO), quiet, and accurate. You can sacrifice a little noise for speed but whe you get into the super duper speed demon bows you can encounter hand shock and inaccuracy and lots of noise. I like a happy medium. You definitely need something that fits your draw length and make sure the string is in good shape and it isn't frayed and the serving( thread wrapped around the string where the arrow goes and on the ends) is in good shape. Also always check the limbs and make sure they aren't splintered or delaminated.

If your LH I have a pearson pride with a hard case for sale for 150. You can take it to your local archery shop and have them set it up and you should come out fully rigged around 400 or less.

I'm a rightie. Thanks for the info Tfd. I figured $400 could get me something basic because I'm not looking for anything badass or to become a ninja archery warrior. Are there any brands to stay away from?

Not really any brands to stay away from. I would stay with a newer pse less than 2 years old, bowtech, Mathews, Hoyt, new breed, Athens, or strothers

I bought a MQ1 new in '99. I've killed several good bucks with it. I just recently bought a new bow, but I'm keeping my MQ1.

I know a guy trying to sell a Mathews outback. 29" draw a dozen arrows, case, and release. He's asking $500 but I think he'd take a little less. Pm me if interested and I'll talk more with you about it. Btw the bow comes with quiver, sights, and rest as well.
