Anyone else on here have a Chevy with oil use problems? Have an 08 with the 5.3 and it's just started having this problem. Also experiencing low oil pressure at idle and check engine light even when it's full of oil. Mine does have 132K miles on it so warranty is long gone. Any experience turning off the AFM with a tuner?
The AFM is where it switches from 8 to 4 cylinders at highway speeds to "conserve" fuel if you are not familiar with it.

I had an 07 z71 with the afm. Be glad if that's the only problems your having.

Oh and yea if you can turn it off do it, but I never could find a way to turn it off. My transmission tore up as a result of the afm so i got rid of it and got a ford.

How much oil is it burning? well it had been less than a quart between oil changes. last week check engine light came on and it was 3 quarts low. no signs of any leaks and no obvious smoking.

http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/Search AFM removal or DOD removal. There are plenty of threads on how to remove the AFM. You can completely remove it, but you have to tear into the engine. I bought an 09 5.3 for a old car conversion. I ended up parting it out. I was told it had 20K miles on it, but from looking at the internals, I think it had less than 10K miles on it. But the pistons were covered in carbon buildup from the oil consumption. I ended up with a 2004 6.0 that was clean with no carbon buildup.

Those 6.0's are a little thirsty but solid IMO.

I have a mustang II, Chevy 12 bolt, and a built 700r4 to replace the drivetrain. I have all the carb setup for the 6.0. I have a Comp 224 cam with the 5.3 799 heads (maybe end up milling them .0030) going on the 6.0. It should get me close to 500hp on the motor. It should shread the tires at will.

I've got a 2007 GMC Sierra and right now I'm using about 2 quarts per 3000K. It's been at the dealership for a "study" but nothing they did ever resolved it. I just keep a case of oil in the tool box and increased our travel trip charges a little to compensate for it.

I have a 09' and just got new rings and pistons at 55k miles. Was drinkin 1qrt/3k then installed a baffel plate in oil pan then started using 2qrt/3k. Walked in stealership and said something had to give. I'm now at 65k and no more oil issues. The amf (v4/v8) has nothing to do with oil consumption. The factory messed up a lot of 5.3L by lining up the rings instead of off-setting them like they should be. Yes the amf(v4/v8) can be programmed off to a regular v8. So what was the fix exactly? I'd like to take mine back to the dealer or somewhere to get resolved.

Does the V8/V4 motor get an appreciable increase in gas mileage over a regular 5.3? 2007 GMC Sierra. When you are running on level ground, I get 20-24 mpg with the V4, depending on speed. As soon as you get on the gas or start on a small incline then it switches to V8 and mpg drops to 13-18 depending on the grade or pedal push. Steep hill I get 8mpg going up in V8, 60+ mpg going down in V4. That is per the onboard instant mileage electronic readout.

I've got a 96 Z71 as my hunting truck with Vortec 350 and it has 190,000 miles and doesn't use a drop of oil.
I am convinced that automakers are constantly outsmarting themselves with all their new technology, creating more problems then they solve and costing consumers a lot of unnecessary money on both the front end and the back end.

I have a GMC 5.3, 2008.
Oil pump failure at 55,000 miles, damaged the lifters, and had a complete rebuild as a result.
I love the performance, looks, and ride of truck but stories like these on the 5.3's are everywhere.
I traded an F150 5.4 triton with 170,000 trouble free miles in on it. I'll be buying another F150 for my next truck.
