Tough call for me. Hunting close to a through road, i would rather they use the atv and get on by me. It's more natural on the road and overall less disruption.

However there are many factors to consider. If the road is downwind and i expect my deer from upwind i will take them walking, quietly and quickly. If it's just after daylight or 30 till dark i may have to shoot them regardless of their method of transportation!

The ATV. It may be more disruptive temporarily, but it does not leave a scent trail deer will avoid over time.

Great Topic.

I have hunted two pieces of private property that were "Walk In Only". One was 400 acres square and the parking/meeting area was at a gate on one side. The other was 150 acres that was divided by a county road and the parking/meeting place as at a gate on the road. The only time any type of motor vehicle ever entered either of those two properties was to retrieve a deer.

Here's the cool part....I seen more deer more often on those two pieces of property than anywhere else I have ever hunted in Alabama.

If the ATV comes and goes from hearing I wouldn't think it would bother them bc the "threat" or noise came and went. As trox said, my vote is neither

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

Choosing between the two evils- the ATV. Deer where I hunt don't pay near as much attention to exhaust and other mechanical odors as they do human scent. If I have to travel across a food plot in order to get to a bow stand, I'd much rather someone ride me to the stand. We have one food plot which happens to be our largest and there's only one way in, right through where the deer travel, stage and eventually feed. Luckily I have an electric golf cart now for just the purpose.

We have a camphouse where we park. We build fires, joke, shoot rifles, work on tractors, ect, ect. Hardly a day goes by there aren't bucks in the back yard.
My answer, who knows. If you figure these things out you'll be the first. I'd probably rather have someone walk by though.

We don't have that problem though ......You either go in first ahead of the guy.... or you hunt somewhere else where you will not drive by someone.

If the atv is daily and perceived as routine and comes and goes, the deer will be cautious, but won't always head for the next county. I've driven fairly close to them on the tractor and they would stand and watch. Minute you stop and look at them, it's white tails and hooves. But nothing is a definite.

Same can be said about walking. If you're poking through the woods slowly, forget it. Walk like you ain't hunting and looking, and I've seen them stand, watch and not move.

This is the right thing, but also realize if you hunt somewhere all have to drive past you then you made it tough.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Honestly I have a field planted on a property I hunt ,next to the property line. The guys with the land next to us has a road down the property line bout 15 yards from my field.I have had deer in the field when they drive by on their 4 wheelers and the deer freeze.I was talking to the adjoining landowner the other day and he said he can't count the number of times he's came through there and they'd be 5 or 6 deer in the field that never moved.
Now on the other hand I'm sure if someone walked by they would get gone quick like.
Weird how that works..seems like a loud ass 4 wheeler would run em off not someone quietly walking but I think it boils down to this.
Deer have gotten use to the sound of atvs all over this state and for the most part don't associate the sound of an atv as a "Get the hell outta dodge or I'm gonna get shot in the head"kinda threat.
Someone walking is something they see as a deadly threat cause ALOT of deer get shot by hunters walking in and out versus them getting shot at off an atv.
It may be a dumb theory but deer pattern people and know when they are threatened.
