I noticed this past weekend that red maples are trying to bud out. I guess they've been out for a couple weeks down south but Saturday was the first day I've seen them in Jackson county.
Won't be but a couple weeks until the elms start budding out if we have any mild weather, then the poplars will start about 2 weeks after that and then everything else will come so fast you can't keep up with them and it will be time.

We are about due for a late spell of cold weather. I am actually kind of hoping for it. I like a late spring more than a early spring here in south AL.

Me to.

But our dang grass is starting to green.

I don't want to mow.

Do you want to hear him gobble, or do you want to kill him.

Some red maples started blooming here (Garner NC) in late December this winter. That's two years in a row they've done that. I drove down to FL and there were lots of red maples already seeded out along 95 as far north as Florence SC the last weekend in January. I heard doves calling on Christmas day, and saw some doing the courting flight in early Jan. I had to mow my grass at least once in Nov, Dec and Jan so far this winter, and it's needing it again now.

Last winter was worse. I had blueberry bushes with blooms on them on Christmas Day.

Seems like here they're prettymuch like clockwork gonna start seeing them within a couple days either side of February 1.
Of course last year they were a little early, but everything was last year; even turkeys got off the schedule a little last year.

Yep. Stepped outsode this morning to take the kids to school and it was 50 degrees, a light fog, birds chirping. I found myself straining to hear a gobble.

Heard birds this morning, maple's starting to bud, roses are putting out leaves and lilies are trying to push through the mulch.

Also found one of our irises with two blooms almost ready.

Five weeks to opening day.

I was walking the lab at work the last two mornings at the shop and the only thing that was missing was a thunder gobble! My Shop backs up to oak mountain

Cleaned a wren's nest out of our front door wreath yesterday. Lots of doves paired up and looking to nest.

song birds in south alabama think it spring time. go out at daylight and check it out. also, if the dog woods start to bloom,
the turkey are gobbling.
