well i owned a 7 mag for 5 years and distinctly remember shooting a buck 5 times with it and then having to drown him in a beaver pond after i used all 8 of the bullets i had on me. shots between 250 to 50 yds, when i shot him the first time he ran straight at me. i shot a coyote from 270 and you may have stuck a pencil in the exit hole. i killed probably 10 deer with that gun and only dropped 2. one of them was a doe i spine shot at 319 as she was trotting across the gasline and the other was a 6 point that was on the other side of a 2" pine sapling i dead centered. i was not impressed and i shot a variety of weights and different bullets.

No offense but maybe you shouldn't be shooting that far unless you put the time in behind the trigger. I've killed a lot of deer with my 7mag and like tc said I've had to trail one deer I shot at 200 yards behind the shoulder with a fail safe she ran maybe a 100-150 yards

ok who said i couldnt shoot long distances? i have plenty of trigger time. try to find someone else who has killed a deer with a remington 7400 30-06 without target turrets from 450. before you open your mouth you might want to read what i said. I DONT LIKE 7 MAGS, and i dont see why everyone who has one other than a select few try to push them in everyones face. in my opinion a 7 mag is probably a good gun if you are shooting elk or if you hit a bone, but once again i have already owned one and it was very accurate but i didnt like the minimal damage it did to the whitetails that i shot.

I shoot a 7 mag, with 140gr Nosler Partitions and it kills like a lazer beam, almost never have a deer move 10 yards.

Your problem is in bullet selection. Most 7 mag bullets are designed for elk and do not open fast enough for thin skinned, smaller whitetail deer.

there is no such thing as a bullet moving too fast to open up, the faster you push ANY bullet the faster and more it will expand.

once again diarrhea of the keyboard. the scope i have on my rifle that i hunt with is a 6.5x20x50 i have killed deer as close as 10 yds with that rifle, looking through that scope. never let one get to 5yds but at 15 ft i think i could just point it at him if i couldnt see him through the scope. i have killed probably 35 deer looking through that scope and never had a problem but i guess since i am shooting a 30-06 and i hunt in the woods with it sometimes i should have a 2x7 scope or something like that.

thank you fred, i know my problem was bullet selection, i tried core lokt, nosler ballistic tips, sierra game king, fusion etc,
i just got tired of it and went back to my 06. i am glad that you caught on that i wasnt trying to say that a 7 mag moves too fast to mushroom at all, and actually read that i was talking about bullet performance on a small whitetail.
for the people who didnt understand i will just take it to drastic measures. get the 7 mag and put any bullet you want in it and shoot a piece of paper at 100 yds and then shoot a sheet of 1/4" steel at 100 yds. see which one mushrooms more.

My boss once mentioned that those fast bullets didnt have time to expand, they just went through too fast.
I really didnt know what to say. I did not say what I was thinking anyway.

OK, none of the above, you ain't gonna make a 600 yd powerline KING with any of your choices.

i am listening. i am considering a 300 win mag now. just not a fan of 7 mags. thats all. i would not have made this thread if i knew exactly what i wanted. i do know exactly what i didnt want and that was a 7 mag, i even stated that in the first post. about 90 percent of people who own a 7 mag think that everyone else should too. even if the person who they are telling this to recently traded their 7 mag for a new bow and would not own another pos 7 mag.

I'll not tote a 7mm Rem mag again, loud , long and kick. If I ever get out of the woods for long range Whitetails or Elk, I'll be totin' a 7mm with a fat case. smile

Years ago I shot ground hogs with a .270 and 4X12 scope, and a lot of them. You'll learn in a hurry or just kick dirt on them.

.270WSM OK but it really has no advantage over a hopped up hand load or the Hornady Light Mags in a regular 270. Good deer caliber and will do faily long range work. Does have short action and less recoil, I've shot some jacked up .270s that will get your shoulders attention. I'm just a fan of 7mm bullets and what they carry down range.
Got a buddy has a Lazzeroni Firebird, it's a 7mm sitting on what looks like a 50 cal case. High voltage power line king!

i dont think i would be that accurate if a deer came out on the powerline and a guy says, hold on, let me back this mule up to you and right when you shoot it going to kick you off your stool.

Not for me either, I think it has a 27" barrel, and it'll punch the same hole, if you're man enough to handle it. And talk about loud! I guess I'm still a boy when it comes to anything stouter than the 7mm WSM. laugh
