Here is my situation.
I sent my lab to school at 6 months old and he was trained no force to the level of a started dog( Stopping to whistle with hand signals etc). He still has some puppy in him and has a bad habit of picking up a bird and bringing it back within 10 yards of me and then breaks down and wants me to chase him. His trainer is not in favor of shock collars so I have never tried one but I am leaning that way because there is no way to correct him when he takes off with the bird because I can't catch him and chasing him only makes it worse.
The twist in the collar conditioning....We recently had an electric fence put in the yard so that he gets popped if he tries to cross the line...with the flags down he recently got stuck in the shock zone and it constantly shocked him for 10 seconds until the safety feature cut it off after 10 seconds.
I mention this because I don't want to put the hunting shock collar on him and pop him when he starts to run with my bird and him freeze up and relate the shock to where he is standing in the field or anything else.
With that being said, I want to know how to collar condition an already trained dog with a small correctional issue. Anyone have any videos or articles they can recommend?

I know sportdog makes a collar (SD 1225) with a vibration feature that will help you collar condition your dog so you don't have to shock him. It has the shocking capabilities if you ever need to really stop him (like from running in the road or what not) but a buddy of mine collar conditioned his dog with one of these collars by primarily using the vibration feature.

I believe in positive training also. Does the dog know what "NO" means. Once he knows what this command means then you can use it WITH the shock collar.

That being said if he doesn't know what he is doing wrong shocking him will create problems. If possible you may try putting the dog on an very long rope and let him do some short retrieves. When he trys to play just say no or stop and pull him toward you. After this you can incorporate the shocking collar when you give the dog the stop command. The dog will grow out of this but dont let it become a habit.

Vickie Lamb Deal wrote a book that is really good on training dogs with shock collars.

Repetition is the key. I used the long rope idea on a deer chaser I had. The dog would not stop once it smelled a deer. I just kept her in the truck and when I saw a deer I would drop the tailgate. I would yell "no" and when the dog got to the end of the rope I would adjust the behavior. Later I incorporated the shock collar. It took a while but she finially figured out it wasn't worth it.

When the dog gets 15 yards away from you, break and run in the opposite direction. He will chase you. You stop and take the bird. Won't take long to break his habit. No need for a shock collar on a lab, much less a 6 month old puppy, and yes I've successfully trained a dog or three.

Shock collars can be valuable tools if used correctly. I don't mess with labs so I don't know about them.

^^ that... The one I used on my pup was about 30ft long. If he don't heel, just pull him in. Good luck.

I think shocking him while he has a bird in his mouth could cause a lot more problems. Maybe try turning your back to him when he acts up and see how he responds. Maybe start walking away like you're ignoring him.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have a sportdog collar with the beeping feature in addition to the shock. I may try that under the right circumstances. I have pulled the turn and running away from him and turning my back one to many times and he has that figured out...you are right thoufh, at first he would follow me but now it would take at least 10 minutes of me ignoring him before he gives up. I also have used the long rope dove hunting but it's such a hassel keeping it from tangling in the field along with everything else. I am going to do some reading on collar conditioning and see if I can do it in a way not to associate it with his electric fence. I am taking him duck hunting in Ms this weekend for his first flooded field duck hunt so it should be interesting. Not sure if I should put the collar on him and just use the beeping to see how he reacts..I know I will be tempted to pop him when he hauls ass with a duck though.

Collar can be very useful tools if used properly. I would start conditioning to heel and sit, then move to here. My pup went through a phase where she wouldnt want to bring ducks back while training, collar conditioning helped then force fetch really cleaned things up.

Just remember that you can ruin a dog if you don't use the collar properly.

You have received some very good advice. Take the dog to a lake toss the dummie or bird out into the water. When the dog retrieves the object and swims back grab the object as soon as you can. Give the dog a lot of praise. Shock collars are great training tools in the hands of so people but I have seen good dogs ruined beyond repair in the hands of a person who does not know how to use one.

You must collar condition the dog before a collar is effective. They have to know how to turn off the pressure. Lardy makes a video that goes from start to finish. I do disagree with him on the levels he conditions one with but he is the best.
