At a place in Dallas County I hunt, we have two distinct color variations of deer. One is a light brown, which we call piney woods deer. We've never killed one over 200lbs. The other we call swamp donkeys. They have a grey hue to em, bigger feet, and are bigger in body size. We killed one a few years ago that was 240lbs. The racks seem different also between the two.

Hunt that area as well and see dark grey deer all the time. I think it has to do with the habitat they live in. Most deer also change color as the year goes on.

Whitetails have a short reddish brown summer coat, which is replaced by a thicker warmer grey coat in winter. If a doe is nursing, it may delay the change, as it takes a lot of protein to grow new hair. If I have a choice between a brown doe and a grey one, I will shoot the grey one--she is less stressed and probably in better condition.

My only story with genetic variations comes from the club I was in, in Shelby county a few years back. I started to notice that if we killed a buck with a weird scraggly rack it had a tail about 12 to 16 inches long but if you killed a sho nuff goodern with a nice pretty rack, it had a short tail 5 to 7 inches long.

Yeah c’mon. Daniel White
