Better question for those two calibers would be open sight lever action vs. scoped bolt action.

Lever action: Quick handling, shouldering, and aiming. Easier to walk with and carry if you're stalk hunting. Cool. Much, much quicker to aim and shoot with open sights. Wide field of vision. Lightning fast second shot.

Bolt action: Longer range. More accurate. Better ballistics with this round. Scope is better for low light hunting. Slower second shot.

Some truth in what ya say, but she can have it all. Something like a Browning Mico-Hunter is great for women and kids, short barrel and stock. Then top it with a low power variable scope with a heavy reticle, mounted low of course, is fast on the target.

Just asking but why not a 243?

" Lightning fast second shot." ?
She may be Annie Oakly, but the only guns I evaluate for quick second shots are shotguns.

My DIL will be on her very first deer hunt one morning this weekend. She'll be using the NEF single shot 30-30 that my son killed his first deer with. I got it for my son on Veterans Day when he was 10 and he killed his first one the next day. It has a LER shotgun scope on it so no danger of getting 'scope eye' from recoil. She shot it 3 times Sunday and did very well.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

7-08 without question. Second shots? My dad always said "you can't miss fast enough for it to matter".

Ever had a deer keep going after you hit it?

Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. If it ain't DRT when you hit it, hit it again.

That's what they teach about shooting people. Why should deer be treated differently?

I never had to worry about a deer shooting back, so making sure he dies on the spot isn't the same concern for me. Also, I always plan on eating any deer I kill, so the less shot-up he is the better in my opinion, and the last thing I want to do is just sling lead at the back end of a running deer.
I try to only take a shot I like, if the angle isn't right, or if it's obstructed the safety never comes off, he gets another day.

After I shoot, I'm a lot more interested in seeing what he does & where he goes, if he's flopping around I might jack in another round, but really I usually don't even think about it. I guess if I have a clear line of sight like hunting in a big open hollow a second shot might be doable, but hunting around pines with thick little hardwood bottoms like I do, you'd pretty much have to be satisfied with your first attempt, the second one would just be at the brush waving where he went through.

Love the lever action, iron sighted 30/30. If you're hunting woods, the 30/30 is all you will ever need. It's reliable, quick handling, and kills deer dead. The ammo is also cheap and easy to find. If we chose weapons merely off the ballistic charts, we'd all be shooting the latest Win/Rem mag. Deer don't care what you shoot em with......

My favorite for a low recoil gun is 6.5 Creedmoor.
