Okay I am going to say this! Listen good!
YOU CAN'T JUDGE YOUR DEER POPULATION BASED ON WHAT YOU SEE ON GREEN FIELDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with Barry. I base mine on trail cameras at feeders from February thru April and then trail cameras at acorn trees from October thru late December. Problem is I'm seeing the same small amount of does at those feeders and acorn trees that I see in the green fields during December and January. That's what worries me.

I do still shoot some does off my hunting lands, but I am also in a heavy populated area.I do think we as hunters should regulate ourselves and look closely at our deer herds individually, but I also believe the problem is not those of us who actually manage our lands, but the ones who never step foot outdoors until the day deer season opens and start blasting away at every deer that moves. Those people are the problem,I personally love the 3 buck limit,it has in fact helped me mature as a hunter, and helps me keep my finger off the trigger.I used to be part of the problem myself, and I regret every young buck I shot, and the does I shot just to be killing a deer...
I would rather be turkey hunting

This year is by no means a good year for "observations while hunting" to be used to conclude deer harvest is too high. Last year I had logged 56 deer in the same amount of hunts by muzzeloader season. This year I have only seen 6 deer total. I think whatever Vernon Tull has, I have caught it. We finally got a couple of good frosts to kill back the native greenery, but acorns are still readily available in a lot of places. When food is everywhere deer sightings go down the drain.
The northwest corner of AL has also been a victim of EHD a couple of the last few years. Not just isolated cases, but widespread death. It may take a few years to bounce back.
I've had no problem getting deer on cameras, but they sure aren't moving in daylight anywhere I'm hunting.

I just laugh at folks in Lauderdale CO who say this. I guess all the deer must be where I deer hunt or rabbit hunt. I sure can't see a decrease in numbers.
Averaged over 7 deer sightings per hunt in Franklin Co the last two years. I guess I'm lucky.

In Winston County, close to Bankhead, where I hunt I averaged less than .35 deer per hunt.

My farm is in franklin county must not be normal either based on tracks, and browse pressure in woods and green fields. I have hunted 5 times this year so far and saw 3 deer once and 4 another time while in stand hunting. There have been some hunts that I didn't see anything but it wasn't because there were no deer it is because I was in the wrong place completely my fault. I am definately not killing too many does on my property.

Being able to kill two doe a day for three and half months is cutting edge deer management. I am finally glad Alabama is out in front on this leading instead of bringing up the rear as they usually. As soon as we get these doe killed down to about 5 deer per square mile and everybody starts killing them big 150"+ deer every year and Alabama starts putting as many in the books as Iowa and Illinois every other state gonna start using the same management plan. Y'all just wait and you will see.
Hahahahaha what a joke this state is.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

You're not leading, but still lagging behind. TN's Unit L has allowed 3 does per day for the entire season for quite a few years now. Amazing thing is, we still have does. Perhaps AL hunters are more bloodthirsty, but in Unit L counties in TN, although hunters are allowed 300+ does and only 3 bucks per year, harvests still favor bucks slightly (usually, harvests in those counties run about 55% bucks, 45% does). I think the Unit L regs haven't done much harm because of hunter desires and attitudes. Hunter surveys conducted by the state found most hunters can't use more than 2 or 3 harvested deer per year (or don't want to deal with more harvested deer).

Oh the good ole southern doe hunt conversation...
I would like to see the doe days reduced on public lands, but until it does I'm shooting everything that moves, that's what everybody else does. I'll just continue to travel out of state to shoot good bucks, I'm downing spikes and all in Bama That's the spirit.

I think ya'll ought to kill more does. They eat up way to many acorns that the turkey could be eating. When I am president I will see that deer numbers are cut back to a number where they could be considered extinct.

Went on a hunt sun evening with my oldest, and we saw 9 does and little ones and one three point. My cameras say the same thing, plenty of does (in my area).

I find it ironic that many people who WANTED buck limits vs education are now proposing education vs regulation on the dwindling deer numbers in many areas and antlerless harvest. Actually, laughably funny!!! I was getting a nice chuckle out of that myself when I came up on your post.

I think TN is still lagging a bit since they allow 3/per day in unit L. If they want to get ahead of the curve on this they should allow 3/per day in unit A and B. I guess this is because A and B has lower deer densities. Alabama just lets it ride at 2/per day no matter how low or high the deer density are. With all of the talk on here about people just doing the right thing and not needing any kind of limits forced upon us. I think the state should just do away with all limits and seasons and just let people do what they think is right on the land they hunt.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

Dang, I agree with a lot of posters on here. Even Barry yelling his point, which I really agree with!!!
I do know this: QDMA says "adequate" doe harvest (of course, based on data) and they never say, "Every doe you see!"
I think Dr. D is wrong about the fact that he thinks that you can't shoot too many does. Given the right circumstances, I think you can. And, I think it's happened on too many pieces of property. However, like BamaFred said or pointed out... deer respond to pressure and lead in a negative way!
Making the decision to shoot does should be based on several points of information. Not just sightings.
