so im kinda new to hunting this will be my second year, anyways I got some property overlooking about 20 acres of good looking rye grass and assorted greens, but the woods that meets the field is 40 acres deep, the woods caves in from both sides and at the bottom there is a good looking creek that runs forever. Down at the bottom of the creek there is an old dirt road bed that follows the creek( which u can tell is a game path) u can see where somethin is kickin the leaves, the woods though is all hardwoods maybe just a hand ful of pines, where in yalls opinion would be the best place to set up? over the field or down in the holler? thanks yall

Hi jaret! If I've got a new piece of property and there's a creek on it I'll go straight to it. Find easy spots to cross it and you're sure to find sign of where they're crossing it. If it's dry in spots or low in spots they'll likely move through it as well. I love hunting creek crossings, they can be very productive.

Hope this helps.

Look for edges, structure and pinch points. Good spots are where two timber types meet, say pines meet hardwoods or cut hardwoods meet un-cut; thats an edge. Hog back ridges, points saddles; structure. Saddles, where timber necks down, two large pieces of timber with a small one connecting them, where the creek makes a bend; pinch point. The best is to find all of these in one spot. wink

Figure out the best access to those stand sites without disturbing the area. Keep the predominant wind directions in mind and have two or three stand sites for different winds. If the wind isn't favorable then stay out of there.

Some good advice ^^^, when you find one of those can't miss edges/structure/pinch points it will probably have multi trails coming together like a wagon wheel. Put up or have 2 stand sites for different winds, more than one approach is good too.
Keep the area quite, don't over hunt a spot, hunt smart. I've been chasing whitetails for about 40 years and the past few years I've come to believe keeping the area quite and not hunting a spot where you expect to kill a mature buck till "the time is right" is the most overlooked thing hunters do. This doesn't mean don't hunt till rut, just have a couple places in mind and stay away till pre-breeding/breeding. This can be hard on a small property though. If you are after mature bucks, they MUST feel comfortable or they won't move in daylight.

this is very good advice, mature deer will pattern you much faster than you can pattern them.2dogs knows what he is talking about, pinch points and edges are perfect places to catch a big deer off guard, and the hog back ridges are much better places to find an old buck cruising when the rut is getting close,do not over hunt an area as said before, and pay close attention to your entrance and exit from your stand.

I would rather be turkey hunting

thanks guys for all of the advise!! but to answer your question there is absolutely no pines in the creek bottom woods is filled with OAKS and poplar scattered here and there, ive counted like 7 pines and there little, too little to climb. This land connects to my grandfathers land which is bout 200 acres of pasture ground, but like i said before there is about 40 acres of woods.

Woods in AM, maybe field in PM. I really like the woods, thicker the better.

if you have any overgrown pasture, don't over look that either especially if it butts up to your timber, this makes a perfect edge and mature bucks love this kind of area, the nastier the better.

I'd go to the creek bottom and set up in the worst possible place to try to get drag a deer out of.
