Swamp White Oak leaves look alot different than a regular White Oak, closer to Chestnut Oak than anything. And the underside of the leaves are almost white. They are pretty rare as far South as Alabama.

Think your tree might be a Swamp Chestnut Oak? They are in the White Oak family and have a leaf kinda like you discribed. I don't have them near me, but they are common in many areas in Al. and I understand deer love them.

Think your tree might be a Swamp Chestnut Oak? They are in the White Oak family and have a leaf kinda like you discribed. I don't have them near me, but they are common in many areas in Al. and I understand deer love them. Yes they do! If they are located in a swampy or wet area, I bet they are swamp chestnuts. Acorns about as big around as a nickel, some bigger. Leaves will be oval with a sawtooth edge. Bark is gray and scaly.

They're pretty trees for sure I wish we had more of them in Jackson County.

I love em - one of my favorite hwds and great deer food. We plant them mixed with white oak and I see them in mixed stands with pine and white oak. Not on the high and dry post oak ridges but in between those and the bottoms.
