Brazilian jiu jitsu, Karate anymore is like taking a fitness class, start your child in brazilian jiu jitsu, you will not have to worry about him and he will be able to defend himself. Usually when someone attacks you it ends up on the ground one way or another, karate is ok for stand up, but grappling is where its at. my son has a black belt in karate and a purple in bjj. I can tell you from experience he can mop the floor with alot of adults in the karate class by getting them on the ground and making them tap out or pass out. but make sure its real bjj cause they are only about 3 in al. samuel puccio in bham, spartan fitness in bham, and triad in cullman. everyone else is judo hybrid b## Sh$$. I think there is another in chelsea,al. but that is it. investigate, investigate before you commit .

I've taken Taekwondo, Kenpo and Kung Fu. BJJ is great for learning how to defend yourself if you find yourself on the ground but I prefer to learn how to stay off the ground. Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to martial arts but the bottom line is this....it's a great thing to involve the kids in and you have to start somewhere. Once work slows down I'll put my whole family into some sort of program.

No experience with my kids, but I can tell you that a good instructor can teach some discipline and manners to problem kids (whose parents failed to do so).

What are the reasons for wanting to take it? Self defense? Confidence? If so then he needs to be wrestling, not martial arts. It's more practical in a scrap and will give him the same confidence and better physical conditioning. He will compete in REAL competition early and often.

It will make a difference in his work ethic in everything he does too.

That's not a knock on Martial Arts, they have great positives too.

don't really know at this point ffp...he's 9 and my parenting to this point has been to let him try just about whatever he asks for to see if it sticks including scouts, art classes, lego classes (yes, they get together and build stuff with legos), ALL sports and piano. he loves scouts and the outdoors and we get to do it together so it's been a big plus...i was sorta surprised when he asked for karate but then asked several more times and he has his first lesson tonight.

i may ask for more input on the bjj IF the karate takes off...i'm hoping it's for the reasons mentioned...confidence, fitness, etc. but to this point the answers are 'because it's cool' and 'i just want to try it'.

Please be careful with karate, look at the old school ultimate fighting championships with royce gracie, you will see how different styles stack up. wrestling is great, but it is not a submission focused style, its a pin for points.
not to knock the tkd or karate, or kung fu or whatever. the ultimate fighters are the best in the world, and no matter how good a stryker you are against a grappler you will be on the ground, you better be able to deal with that. first thing kids in a scrap do is headlock and go to the ground. you can try to kick and punch but you are going to the ground. Also alot of these karate schools give you 1 free lesson then spring a contract on you with your kid standing there wanting you to commit for a year. Trust me ive been there done that. when my son's contract was up he only does bjj, and has since he was 10. he got his black belt in karate at 10, he did it for 2 years and he has been in bjj for 7 years and is not close to black belt. that says alot right there. so really be careful.

Alabaster has one of the best wrestling programs in the state. Glenn Alberato is coach. Norm Latona from Southeastern Pond Management is as well. Both are great guys. Building is located next door to the SPM facility. They will let you swing by and watch. You will be impressed. Tell him Ron Glasscock suggested you come take a look.

The boy is 9, I think I'd not worry about MMA for a while yet smile

I took tae kwon do when I was a kid, it taught alot of respect and was a pretty good work out.

XIV, don't do it. I wanted to do karate as a kid, and my parents wouldn't let me. Very glad of that now.

I would take time to find the right fit. If he wants to learn dynamic kicking..Tae Kwon Do...or a power karate. I have been in Martial arts for over 37 years. I have High degree black belts in 3 styles. I currently teach at a MMA /TKD school. I know alot of people think that ground fighting is good...but it really has NO practicality in the street.

Its ok when your at the school and theres a ref...but I also trained in boxing, fought full contact in competition until I was 35, was a high school wrestler and trained in combat karate in the Army...and spent ten years of my life arresting criminals. If you hit the ground...bad things happen.....you will find yourself getting kicked in the head or head stomped by the individuals friends.

Someone tapping out..is not an option. If I hit the ground..im breaking joints...thumbing your eyes out onto your cheeks and SURVIVING. all niceties fall to the way side and things get turned up to extreme damage. Street fights last...seconds...and if its over 30 seconds get worried.

You dont want people at close quarters as well...as thats when you get cut in the street. You have to be well versed at three ranges...kicking range...punching range...and grappling..elbow and knee range. When the crap hits the fan...you dont ever want it to go past kicking range. One very hard side kick to the mid section(read..LIVER) stops ANY fight..immediately. And Im not above breaking someones leg as soon as the ball starts rolling by kicking out their knee. Violence has to be quick..and FINAL.

You want him to go to a school that teaches you respect and discipline as well....so that he wont have to fight...he will know how to handle himself mentally as well as physically. But you DO NOT want to send him to a school thats more like daycare...and turn out kids with Blackbelts who CANNOT handle themselves in the street.
I also only train in FULL contact schools...where you learn to follow thru when hitting...as pulling techinique in class equals..pulling technique in the street.
Also, half of fighting is how well you TAKE a hit..not just how well you give them...and if your not getting hit hard...you never learn how to deal with the REALITY of violence. IT HURTS!
and you HAVE to be able to still throw them when youve been hit...and hit hard, that is what seperates the men from the boys...believe me.

I have 4 kids in Tae Kwon Do at Mark Smith's in Pelham (2 level 1 black belts - 13 and 11 year olds, 1 red level 3 - 7 years old, and 1 green level 1 - 5 years old). Mark is more laid back than Danny Williams. Danny is an awesome instructor. I have a niece and 3 nephews that take with Danny. It depends on what you are looking for out of it for your son. Hoover is too far for us to take kids to class as many times as they go each week. Our oldest 2 kids help teach some of the younger classes in Pelham.

Agree x2. My dad has been in law enforcement forever and taught me to keep my ass off the ground. Unfortunately he taught me how to take a hit too.

^^This^^

You definitely want to learn stand-up for self-defense. If you get in a street fight, it will probably be more than a one-on-one situation. If you get on the ground, your an easier target.
