True Story.
My son fell into this mindset when young. Just couldn't wait to earn money and get nice vehicles. He's 26 now. He has a house and a car payment. His fiancé has a car payment. He will be completely debt free, including the house, by the end of next year. He will be debt free, with the exception of the house within 6 months from today. Probably closer to 4 months if he doubles down hard.
I couldn't be more proud of him. He's realized debt is indentured service. That’s amazing. What do they do for a living? He works as a home inspector with my company. And he day trades. She's a director at a mental health facility. Soon to be THE director. Together they earn good money.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

As long as Democrats are running this country, we will have these problems. My oldest is 26 and is talking about buying a house. Unfortunately he will pay $450,000.00 for a house that should cost @$200,000.00. He will also have a mortgage at @7.5% when it should be about 4%. Not sure how these young people are going to achieve the American dream without being strapped.

I have no status. 10 year old truck. Looks decent. Not afraid to put it on the road. I’m good

I paid my truck off in November of 22. It's nice not having that payment coming out every month. Last August I "robbed" my Roth to pay off the house, camper and couple of credit cards when I turned 59 an half. Only reason I did that was a divorce and going on disability. It's nice not having ANY PAYMENTS.
if i hadnt taken up hunting i might have became a juvenile delinquent or worst taken up GOLF

We still have our 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe that we bought new in 2008 that DoA drives back and forth to work, a 2005 F250 King Ranch that we bought used in 2015 and a 2014 GMC Yukon XL that we bought used in November 2022. Currently vehicle payment free, but I am sure at some point we will have to either put a good chunk of money into what we have or buy something else, but at this point I don't know that I can stomach the new car prices unless they come down and lean toward a good used with low mileage vehicle and let someone else take that depreciation hit.

It’s about to serve my son well too. After 266k in the seat I’m sort of tired of it. Hopefully he can learn to drive a stick on it without too much mayhem. If you see us around Hoover with a 15 year old in the driver seat stay back on hills! I remember well the day I let Irish Jr. drive for the first time. I don't get scared very easily, but I was scared. I guess because he's such a smart guy and I had high expectations only to find out at 15 years old he didn't have the skills I thought he would have. Let's just say the brakes on a 2004 GMC Envoy don't work very well on the passengers side. Year before last when I was out visiting him in Seattle, he took me for a ride in the Cascades in his 450 horsepower AWD Audi rocket ship, and I remembered once again how scared he can make me in the passenger's seat. God that car was badass. Sounded and drove like a formula one car. 70's muscle cars ain't got nuthin' on cars today. (Other than the vintage cool factor.)

I always find it interesting that the "been driving this old truck you stupid for buying new chit I'm smarter than you with money" aldeer crowd that rents somebody else's land to go deer hunting on.
I don't think people are stupid for buying a new vehicle. People should do what they want to make them happy. I think the point of the article is that sometimes a new vehicle doesn't bring all the happiness that is promised. On the other hand, based on personal experience, financial freedom does definitely enhance your personal happiness. I don't think people are stupid either for buying what makes them happy. So we agree with that. I'm blessed to be able to enjoy financial freedom and I have all the scars and back pain for it just like you and many others on here. Not being a part of the machine goes a long way as you get older. You are 100% correct on that statement. And on the part about working your ass off to achieve financial freedom. Financial Freedom is better than the new car smell.

I am 57 and have only bought 1 vehicle new. I have an 02 Tundra that my son drives that is approaching 400K miles. My 05 Tundra DC has about 170K on it. When I was looking for trucks when I bought the 05 about 6 years ago, $25K didn't buy you much as far as a used truck with 4wd. I hate making a car payment.
And the truck market frustrates me now anyway. Buy a GM and you deal with transmission issues, and the whole cylinder deactivation headache. Fords, have phaser issues, and I don't think I like the idea of an aluminum bed. If I buy a midsize, the only real benefit is its smaller, they really don't get any better mileage. Diesels are expensive and require DEF. I don't like this 0w-16 or 20 motor oil. That is to thin. I don't like low tension piston rings either. Both those cause excessive oil consumption in my opinion.
It used to be you could have a clean and uncluttered engine bay. Engines used to look like a work of art. Now they are a jumble of hoses and wires. They put big plastic covers on the engines so you can't see the mess, and the cover just holds heat in under it, cooking everything they want to cover up. Not to mention, its just more crap you have to take off to get to the engine to work on it.
This is why I bought a 1996 F-150 4x4 300ci inline 6 manual transmission for my project - retirement - haul stuff - run to Lowes - truck. Probably going to put my "nice" 2018 Ram 1500 up for sale and make my 2013 Rubicon my daily driver in retirement. I really want to do something like this, but I don't want a manual transmission. You don't need much to have a modern fuel injection set up on one either. In 1996 they had fuel injection. That's one of the reasons I bought it. It's a nice blend of old skool engine, transmission and looks, but it's got enough modern stuff to keep it more reliable. Speaking of that, I need to get it in the body shop and the upholstery shop...
