Guys this is gonna be long but yesterday was a blessing and I’m proud of this one. A little context for those of you that don’t know me, I’m Will, I’m 25 and I was paralyzed in 2020. I use a wheelchair. You two legged bastards move quick and are hard to keep up with and although I wouldn’t trade it for the world, most of the time I end up needing a handful of help and end up deer hunting turkeys just blind calling and sitting in one spot for way too long. But yesterday was special. Set my ground blind up Sunday on a strut zone in a food plot gobblers had been pretty regularly. I was able to get in really early about 5:40 or so and I knew I staked it down good but with the wind whipping like it was a small part of me was surprised it wasn’t in the top of a pine tree somewhere. The wind gave me enough cover to tweak and cheat the blind around and really take my time getting everything just how I wanted it. I wasn’t expecting much of anything early with the wind but a little before 7 I had two hens feed into 20 yards and before I knew it 3 more hens had fed into the little section of chufa patch I was set up on from behind me. Seemed like I blinked and was covered up with eyes burning holes in my soul man. I spent the next small eternity on edge listening sand doing my best not to spook the hens all around me, just cutting my eyes and racking my brain knowing he was going to pop up in just the wrong spot as the hens slowly fed off. I left my house at 3am and was starving so I gave it 20 minutes while I ate my banana and uncrustable pb&j (I only pack the essentials) breakfast of freaking champs. I started calling a little but knowing that I’m paralyzed from the ribs down and above my diaphragm and I can only get so much volume outta my mouth calls, I grabbed my slate that I know I can reach out there with and worked it in. My first gobble of the season erupted out of the bottom behind me from what sounded from in the blind to be 180 200 yards down in there. Being in a pretty damn stationary seated position my window I can shoot from is roughly 12 o’clock to 9 o’clock. I was set up in the total wrong direction for the hens that came in earlier so I went ahead and created a rut with my wheels so that I could pivot if he came in from the wrong direction, as they always do. Once I knew I could cover both sides I hit him back and he cut me off from 60-70 yards still straight behind me. I knew I had a little freedom of movement between the windows I did and didn’t have open and the mesh screen I left up the open ones so I double checked that I could pivot in my fresh rut and did my very best to slow my heart rate, but we all know how that goes.. He walked back and forth, drumming, spitting, gobbling, and all around torturing me for the next half hour 40 yards or so into the woods to my left. I ended up taking the butt of my gun and scratching the leaves in the floor of the blind a few times and he drummed on top of me, in the field, directly behind me on what would’ve been my right side just a few minutes ago. I froze and cut my eyes over my shoulder and there he was, standing 10 feet tall, and not seeing the hen he was talking to a minute ago. Again- keep in mind for this next part that my shooting window is from +/- 9 to 12. I pivoted the little I could get away with and shouldered the gun. Wasn’t until he crept up on my 11 o’clock that I remembered I put this little tape and reeds device in my mouth that I was choking on for a reason and I cut at him to stop him, nothing. I cut right back at him again as he was breaking my 1 o’clock and he stopped at 1:30. I twisted and contorted myself in a way I haven’t been able to before or since trying to get my dot on him. My red dot was as far top and left in the sight picture as it could possibly be but I put it on him and sent him flopping. I pushed out put my gun vest and bag over with him, loved on him for a minute, thanked God, and went and got my truck. 2yo, 10” main beard, 6” double, 1/2” right spur and 5/8” left. This post is more for me to be able to look back on but if you’ve hung in this far I want to be crystal clear here.. I’m not saying I don’t need help. I need lots of it. I couldn’t get by without it, but getting a bird to play the game for me is rare, and winning the game alone left to my own devices is one hell of a feeling. It’s had me by the balls for a while, and I love it.
