Have you guys noticed more bearded hens in your area?

It seems like every other hen I see has a beard. I saw 2 yesterday and another one with a gobbler today. When I was deer shooting I had a group of 30 or so hens come in and a dozen of those had beards. Because I was 5 miles away I doubt the ones by my house are the same ones I saw earlier.

When I was younger I remember a few, but this is getting rIdiculous. 25% of the female population? A young hunter today would surely make a mistake on these hens dressing up like "toms." Several of these suckers have ground dragging beards too.

I’m absolutely amazed at the total percentage of gobblers killed by ppl on here having multiple beards. I’ve killed one in my entire life, and it seems like the same ppl kill them every year. I don’t get it.

I see a beard on a hen about once or twice a year.

Been hunting Turkeys for 56 years. Killed them in Covington,Dallas,Autauga,Macon,Lee,Chambers,Tallapoosa,Shelby Counties. Never have seen a Bearded Hen nor killed a multi-bearded Gobbler but I know they are out there. I've only killed 2 banded Ducks in all those years so guess I've never been in th' right areas.

prolly half of the gobblers near and in Liberty Park had multiple beards. Genetics, I guess.

That is interesting. We have a lot of multiple beard birds. Ive killed a couple 4 bearded, 4-5 with 3 beards, and a bunch with 2. I thought that was common.

Now that I think about it I'm not sure if Ive killed any out of state birds with multiple. 🤷

Must be some genetic thing going on locally.

So, I guess nobody has seen an increase? Must be these trans midwest birds. Too much test (or lead) in the water.

No, bearded hens aren’t real common around where I’ve hunted. I see one occasionally. I killed my first turkey 49 years ago this month and Ive never killed a multi bearded bird.

It would seem that as a genetic trait there may be a positive correlation between multiple beards (papillae) in males turkeys in populations with more females having beards. The most beards I know of on our place is 6. The ones Ive seen always have always gotten smaller as the number grows. But sometimes the second beard is pretty good size but by the time they get to the 3rd through 5th they get pretty thin. If the 1st is the size of a 12 gauge and the second is like a 20 gauge (or smaller) then it is like a 410 and then like a pencil. Some 2nd or 3rd beards are like a pencil, but Ive never seen them shorter than 4 inches. It seems like if they have an additional beard they are always at least that long even on jakes.

But Id say on the average 2 bearded bird the second beard is like a 410 to pencil size and in the 4-6 inch range. Ive never seen a beardless male, but I guess those are really rare.

My son killed killed a mature rio in TX with 1 1/8” spurs, 20 lbs, but with a beard that was 3/8” long and 3/8” wide where it connected to the skin. It didn’t have beard rot either. Just a tiny beard.

I killed 2 mature gobblers one year. One had no beard and one had no sign of spurs. I joked that I had to kill 2 to get a hole one.

That's about my experience. I don't remember but one with a double beard in AL, though I killed a couple of Rios with them in the Midwest. A bearded hen is something I see most seasons.

Beards are just modified feathers. It's something interesting to check out once a turkey is killed, but it's not a big deal to me.
