The SCOTUS ruling didn't create an "anything goes" scenario on NY. The state and cities still have some heavy-handed hoop-jumping laws-rules. New York residents can own and possess a handgun if it is registered and the resident has gone through the necessary requirements for ownership and registration. Non-residents cannot legally possess a handgun in NY unless you have registered it in NY. Possession of an unregistered (in NY) handgun is a felony. Possession of certain types of ammunition is, also, illegal there, (I think). If you had a magazine with 14 hollow-point rounds, you likely would be in trouble if it was discovered. Can't remember for sure about ammo but I believe that's the situation, along with a having a "High Capacity Magazine," too. Unless something has changed regarding this, it's my understanding that if you are a NY resident OR non-resident in a store that sells firearms, you cannot legally touch, hold or pick up a pistol unless you are a registered firearms owner in NY. Jimmy or Joe or Johnny can't be in Islip or Albany or anywhere else and legally handle a pistol, see how the cylinder or action works, etc., in a store. (again, that may have changed). As DryFire noted, if the NY law enforcement was involved they likely will issue a warrant for his arrest unless he turns himself in. They're not going to extradite him over it, but if he returns to NY for any reason and gets stopped-checked-etc, they'll get him. He needs to contact an attorney and take the matter seriously, though. I used to have to travel to NYC on business.
Every time I was there, I made an effort to look and be sure that I didn't leave anything, cause I damn sure didn't want a reason to go back.
If you don't have a choice and have to go, eat dinner at Peter Luger's, the steakhouse in Brooklyn. I always considered that my reward for being a good employee and going instead of saying "Hell No!". Certainly brightens a trip, but I wouldn't go back up there now if they fed me free for a week.
Did you enjoy Luger's? We went and left with a bit of a "could've been better" about the food. It was on my bucket-list for years. Hoping to try Keen's or Gallagher's next time.

If I owned a pistol and took it anywhere with me, I sure as Hell would not leave it behind. Doesn't sound like a very smart guy.

I’ve never wanted to go to New York in the first place. Yup, would never go up there unless I had to for work. The only time I ever went to yankee land was a trip to Millville, NJ many years ago. It felt like being on another planet. Hope to never go back.

Figured it would be good to have one in case of an active shooter. Never got it out while we were there. Just forgot it. Remembered it a few miles down the road. Maid had turned it in. Security guard had it and gave it back to me when i got back there to get it.

I thought the Supreme Court ruled you could have a firearm in NYC. If I remember correctly, before the SC could ruled, NY dropped the law. So they can just reword it and pass something similar in the future. But as Clem noted, there's still a bunch of hoops in order to own a gun. Like others have mentioned, I would get an attorney. Local police could probably still arrest him and "hold for extradition" if they wanted too. Not something I'd really wanna figure out on the side of the road.

I thought the Supreme Court ruled you could have a firearm in NYC. If I remember correctly, before the SC could ruled, NY dropped the law. So they can just reword it and pass something similar in the future. The case was about transporting a firearm (pistol, mostly) from a residence to a range. NY said, in essence, "only from home to range and back home, locked, covered in virgin's blood, in a safe in the trunk, all these hoops." The case pretty much was "This is BS, I should be able to carry it with me IF I'm registered and do all the other hoop-jumping you Commies demand." When the case got to SCOTUS and a hearing was imminent, NY dropped the law and hoped the court wouldn't hear the case since it was mooted. SCOTUS heard it anyway, as it should have since that was a bullchit move by NY, and issued a positive ruling. (Bruen, I believe). As Goodman noted, NY and other states can merely say "Ooopsie, sorry, didn't meanado that" and then create another law that must be sorted out with a crap-ton of money spent doing so. If you notice in a bunch of the rulings in NY and California, they create laws that in the process before approval are deemed unconstitutional. And the state says "Ehhh, OK. Whatever. We're gonna do it anyway and then you can take us to court if you want." When they get taken to court and lose, the states act like babies whining about how safety is in peril, blah blah blah. They're not the only states that do this kind of thing, though. Legislatures do this kind of stuff all the time with various other issues.

NY is special. They dont recognize other states permits. They even have places like Times Square and central Park that are prohibited zones and only a uniformed officer onduty can carry in those locations. I know a local officer that just a few months ago was a NYC officer. He told me that even he was not allowed to carry in those locations off duty. I was planning a trip to NYC because we have never been there. But I said screw that. Now we planning a trip to Yellowstone. Stay out of the city . 10 years ago you would have enjoyed a visit. I went up and had a blast a few times but now it's a shithole and getting worse in the city
