Sad video but great. Thanks for posting

I’m friends with a guy here in West Tennessee who has planted 1,000 American chestnuts in perfect lines. I’ve seen it with my own eyes…did 1000 white oaks next to it. Absolutely beautiful. They are about 20 years old or so. He worked with the American Chestnut society on it.

Gobble4me, is your friend trying to use his to reproduce? Trying to reestablish? I would like some info on where and how to get some seeds, if you could come up with that. I would put some back in the woods around here

I grew up within walking distance of Lacoochee and still live about 6 or 7 miles across the woods from where the old mill was.

I’m pretty sure he’s just establishing. He teaches our Sunday school and will ask him next time I see him. It was a sight to see all perfectly planted and all.

At the point they start producing nuts. I would sure like to have a coffee can full of them. This is a cause i would put quite a bit of effort into, if i had the means.

I know where a tree is but I suspect it’s a hybrid. The nuts drop in early October but you have to be fast or the squirrels will beat you to them.

I watched that the other night. I had no idea the chestnut trees were so large and the wood was perfect for “everything”.
Said it was the largest ecological disaster in the world when they died.

Do any of y’all know or have heard of blight resistant chestnuts? There used to be one on the talladega national forest close to sylacauga but I heard it got burnt up in a wildfire. I know I’ve heard of some elsewhere

Yeah they are a hybrid with Chinese chestnuts and are supposed to be blight resistant. I have a bunch of chestnuts in my freezer but haven’t had any luck getting them to sprout. I gave some to Wiley but don’t know if he had better luck.

I’ve sprouted a bunch of them and given a few away.
From a tree at my neighbors. I put them right next to the house in the mulch on the east side.

I watched and sent to a friend. He's got some. Grown two of four attempts. He's going to get me some. I don't have a lot of places to plant one, but going to try in my back yard, down the mountain. We will see I guess.

Do you know if the ones he's planting are true american chestnuts, hydrids (like dunstan) or chinese? I've planted some of the dunstans and a few chinese. Got 42 dunstan nuts in pots now, with a few starting to sprout. I would love to find some true american chestnuts to sprout, but not sure there are any left.

From what I've read, true American chestnuts have zero chance of growing into a tree. The blight gets them almost immediately.
