Duck blind breakfast/brunch used to be sardines, soda crackers, tabasco, mustard, slice of vidalia onion and a cold Budweiser. Best consumed in an open air location.

Nobody's makin' s science project out of it. Cooking good food is good. If nobody ever experimented with food, we'd all still be gnawing raw meat off of bones neve thinkin' to cook the chit over a fire.

I asked people what their favorites were.

I have been eating a can a day in extra virgin olive oil at work for years now.

Do they ever bother your stomach?

After eating a can nowadays, I have to say they don't sit with me like they used to!

I love sardines and eat them 2-3 times a week. My favorite are Jose Gourmet and I order them from Amazon. Their smoked trout is incredible too. Next would be Bella you can get them from Sprouts if you have one near you. King Oscar is a given since they are good and available everywhere. Another good mail order one is Nuri. I only buy ones in oil, the ones in water just aren’t as good. You might be surprised at how just a little squeeze of lemon will really perk them up. Hot sauce of course is always good. Sardine salad think tuna salad but use the sardines is very good.

Sardines or fish steaks is the only canned meat I will eat. Well that’s not true, I do like some smoked spam.

Growing up I hunted, fished, and shrimped with my paw paw. If you didn’t eat beach cliff sardines at the camp or on the shrimp boat you would have starved to death. I still eat them from time to time, but it’s not like it’s one of my favorites. I use sardines in my DP coon traps sometimes. The guys that help me set get a kick out of me eating the coon bait lol.

King Oscar has a multitude of flavors, plus their canned/jarred tuna is good also. I like Mediterranean flavor, plus the green olive and of course jalapeño.
I’m sure there’s better ones, but for the $ and the variety shop King Arthur imo.

Season Best boneless-skinless in olive oil. I eat them on a cracker with a dab of chipotle Tabasco.

I’m gonna try some of the Jose gourmet pate dips (4 pack).
I like all that kind of stuff. We shall see. Gotta be careful looking up canned fish, cat food will pop up on the same screen! 🤣

Now I'm starting to really appreciate them for, as strange as it sounds, their gourmet qualities and how good they are for you.

1. Loaded with protein
2. Loaded with calcium.
3. Loaded with Omega 3
4. Unlike Tuna they are low in Mercury

At this stage I've just been experimenting with them on crackers, Triscuits, and salads with various toppings like Stone ground mustard, hot sauce and pickle relish. All have been delicious. My favorites so far are:

King Oscar Fillets and whole
Seasons
Brunswick

All in Extra Virgin Olive oil

Least favorite have been:

Beach Cliff in mustard sauce. They didn't taste bad, but they were all stuck together in one big mass of fish and not very visually appealing.

I have lots to try maybe even start ordering some you can't get around here from places like Amazon. Food City in Gadsden had a good selection.

I think my next experiment will be a sardine Bahn Mi on French bread and some Sardine Pasta with tomato sauce or butter parmesan sauce, maybe even take some smoked fillets and make a sardine salad kind of like a tune salad, but with sardines instead of tuna. I think I may even try a Sakushka and a rice bowl too.

I want to try stuff like Kippers too.

I know in the US we tend to think of Sardines as red neck food for hunting, fishing, campouts and working man's lunchboxes, but in the Mediterranean they are delicacies with many different varieties and recipes...

I know a lot of you guys on here eat them. What are you favorite brands and ways of eating them?

I know everyone like pics...

PS: Finally, after 16 years of marriage, I finally found something I like to have that Mrs. Irish won't eat. grin

those look good on that salad. Did you brown them a little? Might have try that. As far as the best heck if I know I just grab a can and like em. I don’t care for the mustard or hot sauce like you I just like plain old sardines in oil. I have heard the kipper fish steaks are great but never tried them. Love me some smoked oysters in the can also when you can find them.
