Thinking about getting a tiller for foodplots, but have no experience with them. Is there a certain brand to steer towards or away from? Which ones do y’all like or don’t like? What do I need to consider to get the one that I’ll like?

Thanks

Look for a Terraforce. The Kubota dealer in Tuscaloosa may even stock them. If not, I think he has the option to still purchase. I could be wrong on that though.
Capital Tractor in Montgomery has them in stock.

I bought mine at Whitworth in Deatsville and I like it. Just make sure you don't have a damn snake in it before you use it. I killed a rattle snake weed eating around mine. I got the 6ft and I believe it was 2500 and some change

We have a 5’ and 6’ King Kutter. Both are early 2000 models. Only thing I ever had to to do was change the oil seal on the 6’. King Kutter sent me the seal overnight free of charge. And they are made in Alabama. There are lots of good brands out there. I stick to gear driven and stay away from the chain driven ones. Also if you use them for food plots, make sure you have as little slack in the top link as possible. Use the correct size pins for it or you will have “waves” in your food plot. Especially if there is a little grass in it.

King Kutter is good
Made in Alabama in Fayette County
Had mine for 6 years had to replace the drive side bearing and seal but of course if you not plowing rocks they last much longer

Another vote for Terra force. Heavy duty gear driven and the heavier the better if you have hard soil

We’ve abused our King Kutter for over 20 years and it’s going strong.

Do you have a disc too? I bought a tiller several years ago to replace a disc I broke and am fixing to go buy a new disc. Unless your fields are very clean tillers are a pain, especially with grasses or vines, and I don’t like the way they pulverize the soil.

I got a 6' a few years ago. It makes a super smooth seed bed but its SLOOOW. I typically bushhog, then go over a field in one pass, but in 1st gear. I use it mostly now for my garden.

For the record, I would not use a tiller for food plots, unless your plots are small and pretty sandy. It’s a slow process in the best scenario.

I have a disc. Been using a 5 footer with about a 30 horse tractor. Not very heavy and seems to take forever. That’s why I was thinking about a tiller. Although, Ive been thinking of buying a tractor, a bigger one. If I do that, a heavier disc to go with the larger tractor may be better/faster than a tiller. 🤷‍♂️

For the current size tractor you have, a tiller will be as quick or quicker than a disc. A disc that size requires multiple passes to get a field ready, with a tiller you can make 1 slow pass and be done.
