I coached with Carl for quite a few years. He is a character! Not many people can say they have won HS state championships in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia! When he was 91, we visited him in a rest home in Pensacola. He said, “I hope yall are coming to get me out of here. There is nothing but old people in this place!” In the 70’s, he was caught hiding in an oak tree with his camo on, spying on another team. I ask him once if that was really true that he got caught hiding in an oak tree. He said, “Hell no! It was a pecan tree!”

I played under his brother Eugene at Monroe Academy for several years.
