Has anyone ever seen a change in accuracy or point of impact going from one brand of 209 primer to another brand of primer? The reason I ask is because I've owned my particular muzzleloader for about 13 years and never could really find a powder/bullet combination that it would shoot good. About a month ago I started testing different bullets/powders and by some miracle I found a load that this gun would shoot a 3 shot group with and all 3 shots be touching at 100 yards. The load it shot so well was 100 grains of loose 777 powder and the 290 grain hornady bore driver FTX using a Remington cleanbore primer. I picked up a pack of the 777 209 primers a while back when things like primers got so hard to find and have not shot any of them yet. I realize the only way to really know for sure is to try them but was just wondering how finicky these muzzleloaders are or can be by swapping brands of primers. Thanks

I can only speak for my muzzle loader. It makes no difference what primer I shoot.

If you always do what you've always done you always get what you've always got

II lump 209 primers into 2 categories, inside each category I see little to no difference in velocity/POI between the two categories you may see slight changes in velocity/POI but not significant.

the first category are all 209 primers branded/marketed for muzzleloaders. These are loaded colder than standard 209 primers and are ideal to use with 777 powder (using using 209 primers with 777 causes the "crud ring" to build up much faster)

second are any standard 209 primers branded/marketed for shotshell reloading. these are hotter and are ideal for and in most cases required to properly ignite BH 209

In your case, you're just changing from one ML branded primer to another so you should be GTG. I wouldn't sweat it, just don't try using standard 209 primers with that 777, I tried it once and I had a significant crud ring after just one shot, after 3 I couldnt get the bullet passed it to seat properly over the powder.

10-4 thanks I appreciate the help. I didnt figure I would see much difference but wasnt sure because I reload my own rifle ammo and I've heard of changing primers affecting the point of impact and grouping so just wanted to make sure it wouldn't affect my groups with this any.

I wanted to try some of the BH209 but that stuff is impossible to find where I'm at and honestly I've never actually seen a bottle of it in person.

The prices I'm seeing for it are ridiculous. If I didn't have loads worked up and 3-4 bottles hoarded, probably wouldn't go down that path now either.

After getting my gun to shoot so well with the loose 777 powder and 290 grain hornady bore driver ftx I dont plan on changing a thing. Gonna try to stock up on bullets and powder that way if/when it gets hard to find I'll have plenty.

Mine shoots significantly better with 209M (magnum) vs plain 209. Powder is BH209. The BH209 prices these days are ridiculous.
