Any of you guys donors? I have a fairly well off relative who said he's done. Sending money for scholarships just to have it usurped by NIL, transfer portal, and players marching for BLM while he's providing for them free tuition, housing and food.

If he's got decent seats he'll need to keep giving to keep them...

I think there will be more like him. The game has changed and not for the better.

Unless you use them for business/entertainment purposes, is it really worth the money these days for basically what is semi-pro football?

If football is that important to him, he'd be better off giving to the NIL collective than the university.

But; that is not tax deductible

Hopefully him pulling his money will not stop college football. I rather enjoy it.

I'm a little surprised the coaches arent talking the big NIL players into just walking on and building numbers by making more scholly's available for the scout team.

I think folks would feel better about scholarship donations if the money went to provide grateful players tuition who got a chance to grow and develop in a program for 4 years.

There are definitions of "recruited athlete" that covers this, and disallows (or used to disallow) the practice you're talking about. Those rules may have changed.

Grateful for what?

And why would a player have to stay at the same program to develop?

I realized 15 years ago that donating to a University was not a very good use of resources. Once you graduate they start calling and don’t stop.

I think you missed what I was saying or I missed explaining what I meant.

Grateful for what? A scholarship instead of being an invited walk-on for a kid that won't be a NIL heavy hitter.

And why would a player have to stay at the same program to develop? Again, this is a kid that is not and may never be a NIL heavy hitter.... Think limited portal opportunities.

These kids play a valuable role in some cases. Sometimes it's just because their ultra-talented friend would go to a school that would offer them. Etc...

I did misunderstand what you were saying somewhat. I thought that you were implying that the players currently receiving scholarships were not grateful and should be. That’s my fault. At the power 5 programs, the university should be bending over backwards for these kids. They are making millions off of their hard work and talent.

And usually the kids that don’t play much, whether walk ons or scholarship players, don’t develop much. Because they aren’t playing or getting many reps at practice. If I were a 3rd string SEC player who never got to see the field, I would transfer until I found a place I could play. That’s the whole point of being on the team for most of these kids. To play the game. The lower level power 5 guys have PLENTY of portal opportunities. All these smaller programs want the kids that are not happy with playing time at their current big school.
