I was walking a portion of my small recreational property this afternoon which I haven’t been on in a couple of years. It struck me that it’s really thinned as the trees have matured and I could clear out a 0.3-0.4acre plot in a few hours of saw work. It has an eastern and southern exposure and sits on a little mound above a flood plain. The down side is it is sloped. I haven’t actually measured it but I’d say it’s about a 4% grade or a little less. Is that too much slope? Erosion would be my biggest concern. The plot would be maybe 80-100 feet wide in a band around the eastern/southern edge of the mound.

Maybe no till broadcast ladino clover and ryegrass (hold on, don’t freak out yet). Nuke the ryegrass with Clethodim before it begins to put on seed. This would allow fast establishment to help with erosion and allow the clover to get established. You could also add an annual clover like crimson or Balansa to have better production the first fall.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

If you don't till I doubt you'll have any erosion. Just keep it planted with something and you should be good.

if sunlight hits it and u don’t disturb the soil, erosion will not be a issue. provided it’s decent dirt and not overtaken by weeds, a multi species blend of small and large grain would be your best bet. multiple eggs in multiple baskets, mother nature has a way of messing up even the best laid plans
