, but why not just say “ Well, based off of your damage reported last year, you need to make sure “X number of deer are harvested on your property this hunting season” and leave it as deer being killed during deer season?

(When) the deer are being killed isn’t what’s saving the crop as much as it’s simply the deer being killed in general, right?

Do most farmers look at 100 deer killed in June/July better than they would look at 100 deer killed in December/January? The deer are gone either way.

They attract deer they normally don’t have during open season, as soon as beans start germinating. In some cases, even cotton. I’ve seen terrible damage to young cotton plants. If you can protect the beans and cotton the first few weeks the damage is typically minimized. They have a short window in which to do that, and killing deer in season doesn’t always lead to less pressure on crops in summer. Winter harvest does help in some cases.

Ahh, that’s the part that I didn’t even think about. Of course I knew that it attracted deer that they “normally” don’t have, but it didn’t register to me.

Could hogs be excluded by an electric fence?

High fencing for deer would be tricky but I'd think an electric fence would work with pigs - not to mention they are year round open season.

A 3 ft high wire fence will keep hogs out

If y'alls simple solution to feral pigs is just throw a 3ft fence around every crop field in Alabama.... you had better let the State and Federal Government know ASAP because they are spending serious money and time trying to find a solution.

If deer put you our of business farming in 2023 they just helped to speed the process along.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

If you didn't figure out how to deal with it you are long gone and somewhere doing something else for a living.

Do you loose a little money planting on 15" and upping the population to 160,000. We use to do double end rows to help offset a bit of the damage. Does that cost money.. Yea a little bit.

I can remember a couple years where we had some of our best beans ever when the deer nipped them by the time they had their first trifoliate.

Does someone somewhere have an issue? Probably. Most farmers are smart enough that if it is long-term to simply plant something else. Right? This issue pales in comparison to an issue we now have with wild hogs. Nowhere even in the same ballpark. 4 pages of a bunch of dribble right here.

We’re not serious farmers, just piddling but deer still have cost us money. That land had been farmed for as long as anyone alive around there can recall. Deer been eating profits up on guys that’s been farming for eons. Deer recently have become more of problem because of the timber practices around helps support more and more deer. If the surrounding land had setup been hardwoods the deer population would be much lower. It’s not putting anyone out of business, not sure anyone has said that here.

I know of farmland along the river where beans are eaten down even though it’s large fields but still viable enough to be farmed. Plant corn and the hogs will eat any profits up. I'm surprised anyone farms it. I know some guys that are getting their traps, dogs and guns ready because war has been declared on the hogs.

I talked to a neighboring landowner that was throwing a fit about deer studies being done 20 years ago and killing hundreds of does and the population hasn’t recovered yet. I just laughed. Another neighbor will tell you, we quit shooting does cause two more show up in its place. Said we’re recruiting deer by killing one.
