To begin with I know nothing about cross bows but am looking at getting one for my son to shoot until he gets old enough to effectively hunt with a compound. What are some things to look for when purchasing…brands, features etc? Not looking to spend more than $500.

Barnett has the best trigger I've tried. Far superior to my Centerpoint. You could get a Barnett 385 and a better scope and stay in your budget. He's going to need a rangefinder too. That's not as fast as some, but it'll have a good trigger.

Budget to speed ratio, Killer Instant. Not as refined as my wicked wicked ridge or horton reverse limb, but will throw a arrow the same.

From what ive seen especially as a beginner level, the barnett is a good affordable option.

So, as a first time user, would you guys recommend the rope cocking device or the crank style? I have never shot a crossbow either, I do have a compound bow and have shot it for years.....I probably will get my crossbow sometime this summer and to practice and be ready for next season....I have areas that I can hunt where a rifle is not feasible.....

I picked up an inexpensive centerpoint ampd 415, put a ravin scope on it and It will stack arrows at 75yards at 380fps.

My son is deadly with it, I have been impressed to say the least.

If you’re practicing (multiple shots) you’ll want a rope cocker. The crank is very handy in the stand/shooting house
