So going to plant a dove field in the middle of 12 acres. If the deer hit it I’ll call it a summer plot. Surrounded by soybean and corn fields so no big deal nutritionally speaking. If they eat my dove field I’ll top so wheat and move on. I was thinking of doing throw and mow Egyptian wheat on the other 9 acres. Anyone have experience with that practice? Don’t want to plow up my whole back section.

I wouldn’t plant it for a dove field. I’ve used it for a screen with success. Walker, too heavy a crop and it’ll stunt itself and won’t get tall enough. Go with a lighter seeding rate to ensure adequate height, but go with a wider strip to allow it to lean on itself. I had good luck with about 10 pounds per acre, and planted in a strip about 30’ wide. I planted the last week of May or the first week of June, and got 10-12 foot height. Hit it with a good dose of nitrogen when it gets about knee high.

How long does it stay green?

Got ahead of myself typing. In the middle of 12 acres I’m going to plant a dove field. Going to treat the dove field as a summer deer plot. Hopefully the surrounding corn and soybeans take the pressure off. Was wanting to plant some sort of cover for deer around the plot. Would have a buffer around plot and would bush hog some back to find birds and such.

Want the does to feel that way. Bucks roam the creeks, so hope to use the does as bait.
