I have a small spot I want to plant something like clover that may come back each year. Has to be a throw and mow style, bc I will be doing it with a fourwheeler and weedeater... Question is what type of clover do I need to plant, and when should I plant it? I want to benefit from it next deer season but should I plant it this spring, summer , or early fall? I don't mind trying something there this summer but was thinking I read where it takes a while for clovers root systems to form... any tips appreciated. It wouldn't be a big plot just small half acre on edge of a creek bed, that might make the deer want a bite while traveling by.

I T&Med quite a bit of clover this fall. Pretty much all of it failed. Pretty sure you need plenty of rain, especially if youre not going to put your seed under ground. I have used white dutch, crimson, arrowleaf and ladino when the weather was good for it and it did come up. The crimson has outperformed the others for some reason. Ladino was hardest to get a stand. Arrowleaf did not come back the next year at all. White dutch has the hardest time competing with the taller weeds and grasses. Weeds and grasses have been the biggest hurdle for all the clovers i have tried. I believe youll just about have to spray your clover plot if you really want it to thrive.

I sure hope youre right. I said they failed but there is some here and there. Nowhere near a full stand. Not even 5-10% of what seed i putout

Clover is really finicky about ph. Probably need lime, plant in Sept from about Montgomery south. Not sure about North of there. Won't start growing good until spring.

Do some whitetail clover. You could plant it now and have it up in the spring, but fall is a better time to plant it. I usually don't see alot of production until early spring from a fall planting.

Clover needs to establish itself in the fall so it will grow in the spring. It grows through the winter just not like in the spring

The problem with sowing clover any time other than fall is moisture. Thats why last fall didnt work out. But its possible even last falls seed will show up in the spring. It would be fine to sow some now, as long as we continue to get moisture and dont have a dry spring, itll be fine. Ive got 25# of white dutch clover on my porch right now that ill put out as soon as the ground is dry enough, hopefully toward the end of next week.

Frost seeding has been used for a long time with good success. In February I’ll be watching for the right conditions to use that method my self.
