You guys that have used the Firedot, would you buy it again for late pm hunting or does it “glow” out your view?
I know the glass is great, just can’t make my mind up on the Firedot. Son has one on his 4-12 and know you can dim it or brighten but didn’t get to look through it much before he moved away.

Thanks for input!

Firedot is one of my favorite hunting reticles. I have the vxr with firedot and love it. It is adjustable to very dim that way in the last legal light the dot is crisp but doesn’t blind you. But you can turn it up in the day too to be bright enough to see in full sun. Mine also has the auto sleep and auto wake. I have had mine for several years now and haven’t changed the battery yet.

I’ve got one on both of my Model Sevens. I actually used the firedot feature for the first time this season on a doe at 225 yards at last light. Adjusted to the lowest setting, it was perfect for me. Doe was DRT. It’s a great low light scope even without the firedot.

Leupold's firedot illumination is pretty much perfect. It will adjust from just a hint of light for low light shooting all the way to daytime bright. It really is good.

Love the Duplex with Firedot. The reticle with dot off is just the right thickness, dot is fully adjustable , always can be the perfect brightness.

Brother has VX5HD 3-5x44 with it. I have the same with windplex, no firedot. I doubt I would ever need it, but kinda wish I would have gotten it just because. I think the scope will go well beyond legal shooting light without, but I have situations in the woods late or a dark corner of a greenfield where picking up the crosshairs was difficult and it would have helped for sure.

I love the fire dot. Didn’t think I’d need it but I have used it a couple times and it was surprisingly nice

I've got a good friend that has that scope on his tikka 308 and loves it. He talked me into getting one and I looked at them really hard and almost got one with the 56mm objective but ended up getting a zeiss conquest V4 3-12x56mm with their version of the firedot. Been very happy with it so far.

I had one but regrettably sold it. Also had the VX6HD 3-18-50. Sold as well. The 44mm VX5 was just as good and could be mounted in a lower set of rings. The Firedot is a definite plus.

Currently have all of these either on rifles or sitting or the shelf. Some of them will be leaving as well.

VX6 2-12-42 (favorite optic)
Swarovski Z3 42mm 4A reticle (2nd favorite) and 50mm
Swarovski Z6 50mm and a 56mm sitting in a box.

To my 54 year old eyes, there is not a tremendous amount of difference in clarity or low light performance. The 56MM Z6 is a marginally better at last light but not much. Edge to edge sharpness can vary a little between some. All will get me well passed legal light. The Leupolds have a noticeably better eye box and eye relief. The glass is so good these days, I personally don’t see the need for Hubble telescope on a deer hunting rifle anymore. At least not for me.

Oops hit the post before the quote.. Buffalo Trace and old fingers don’t work to well this late. lol
I agree with a favorable eye box and easy to see through with no edging. The older Swaro on my wife’s gun is great, but sons Leupold was pretty close when comparing last year side by side.

So let me highjack and ask is the 44mm good enough? Obviously people like the scope, but 44 vs 50 vs 56?
I’ve always had 50mm scopes

If it has good glass. It's all about the quality of the glass . A Leupold engineer told me going from a 40 mm to a 50 mm , with all other things being equal, only adds 1-2% light transmission , and your eye can't see the difference. Don't get caught up in the objective , spend $ on quality glass. Low power scopes 1-4 , 1-5 , 2-7 ish , don't have big objectives , don't have to. I don't get caught up in all that Hubble telescope stuff. I put more stock in a deer killin' reticle. If someone gave me the brightest , most light transmitting , big $, scope on the planet and it didn't have a reticle for killing deer in the woods , I wouldn't tote it.

Yes, the 44mm is enough. It holds its own against other 50 and 56mm scopes I own.

Hunted with my VX-R 2-7x33 Firedot today (thanks Big Al). It has to be the ultimate woods rifle optic. Love that the firedot is daylight bright for snap shooting in addition to being great in low light.

Excellent scopes. No need to get the 56 mm, just use the magnification adjustment ring.
