Iā€™ve had many years Iā€™ve been humbled so I got no justification to pile on to others. Just hope they learn the same lessons I did. I always thought because I was an expert marksman in the military that I could shoot my shot to dial it in at the beginning of the year and I was good.

Nobody but the dedicated and smart ones spend time on the range with their deer rifle and shoot from different positions and rests

There was one guy that legit said he hadn't zeroed his gun. He just laser bore sighted it and went with it. Crazy.

I have only hunted for about 20 years. In that time Iā€™ve wounded one with a rifle, one with a bow and 2 complete misses with a rifle. Odd how you remember everything about those mistakes. Makes you want to practice and never miss again

Iā€™ll ahoot my rifles every year at 100 and then 300-400 for confirmation.

Iā€™d read guys claiming with him at 25 yard and youā€™re good to 300
I donā€™t how many rifle that looked good at 25 and was barely on paper at 100. Usually several inches off and then go to 300.
Iā€™ve never met rifle I can out shoot.

Also I think there are those that think if one can get some blood theyā€™ll get a tracker. Then thereā€™s those guys that say youā€™ll never kill it if you donā€™t shoot.

I personally wonā€™t shoot unless Iā€™m 100% sure I can kill it. Of course thatā€™s not alway the case but feel that a good starting point with regards to shooting at one.

Or throwing a 5 yr old behind a high powered rifle and wondering why they made a bad shot, there is one on the tracking thread with that scenario.

I got humbled this past weekend in MS on a good buck, made what I thought was a good shot at the moment, knocked him down, but he got back up.......I remembered the shot really clearly after he got up, In a rush to get a shot off before he got into a thicket, I know I shot him farther back than I should have. Looked for blood after about an hour and found a small puddle where he fell and got back up, after that, I found two small drops....went back on Sunday morning to look again and found one more small drop and nothing else.....very humbling and never want to do that again....

I have seen this way too many times. I once sighted in a rifle for someone after missing a deer. Then the DA, after I sighted it in, took the rifle to a gun shop to have it bore sighted.
Many more stories of such dumbassery. Maybe I'll make a list of all of them one day.

I went to our public range before deer season because my private range was too wet to drive on. There were 4 folks that had scopes boresighted shooting at 100yds and couldn't hit the target. I told them they needed to start at 25 or closer then they argued with me that the guy that boresighted it told them it would be on paper at 100. I helped 2 the others ran out of bullets and were going to get their money back

Not true for every one. I have personally sat with a 5yo and a 6yo that were DRT shots with a .260 out to 75 yds. They started shooting a .22lr when they were 4 and were taught how to shoot and what it meant to pull the trigger on a deer or other game. No marginal shots were taken out of respect for the animal. Those boys are now in their twenties and hunt because they love it; killing is just part of the experience and not the end all.

A lot of leg shots and back whacks could be avoided by more hunters moving their aiming point back to behind the shoulder. A lot of these hits are a result of shoulder shooters missing a little bit high or low. Thereā€™s not a whole lot of room for error when aiming at the point of the shoulder.

Good to know there are trackers that can help them find the deer and finish them off.

It surprises me how little hunters know about deer in general. Especially their anatomy.
