I now have TWO male Belgian Malinois and a female Mal, and a male Dutch Shepherd. There not even any hope of calm around here...LOL

My Mal Chief looks a lot like your dog. They are the perfect dogs when owned by folks that know what they’re getting into. 24/7 burglar system. 3 Mals and a Dutchie, you are living with a powder keg! It makes life interesting and it keeps you young. My new pup comes from working parents with lots of prey drive. I got the pick from the females and the one that we picked is very bold with a strong prey drive for a 4 week old pup. I plan on breeding her eventually so I’ll be looking for a well-bred high prey drive male to breed to.

We just tracked a deer with Kai, our 8 month old, and easy 65 yard track but it was his very first exposure to a deer. He made short work of it and looked like he’s been doing for a while. He will come, sit, out a ball or tug. We will start working on firming up obedience starting as soon as it dries up outside. I’ve only had him for 2 weeks. His mom is a dual purpose dog for a Sheriff’s Department and his dad is prison detection dog in Georgia.

my original Taz was bite trained, personal protection, drugs, game recovery(she was hell on a dove field), evidence recovery. There is nothing you cannot teach that dog. If you are going to use him on deer recovery get him a blaze orange vest. I like the color of that dog!!!

have 3 Mals. One will be 6 in May (Axel) one will be a year old in March (Kai) and a puppy (Scar) that turned 9 weeks old yesterday.
Axel, 6 years old, mature, laid back FOR A MAL. Very athletic, very loyal, very obedient, scary looking.
Kai. 11 months old. Acts like a 3 year-old child that just had a Hershey bar and a Red Bull and having a temper tantrum. He only acts this way when he’s awake.
Scar, 9 weeks old, learning new things everyday, thinks her name is NO!
If you’re high-strung, never rest, only sleep a few hours per 24 hour period, and have a good general knowledge of canine behavior, then jump on in. Mals are extremely intelligent and want to learn. They are like no other breed that I’ve ever had or been around. Picture this, my Mal (Kai) spends the day in an outside kennel that has a floor 4’ off of the ground, it has a bottom, 4 sides and a roof. My wife goes out and opens the door for Kai, she lets Kai jump out into the ground as she reaches in to get his food bowl. Before she can get his bowl and get out of the way, Kai jumps over her shoulder and back into the kennel, the back over her shoulder onto the ground, then back over her shoulder into the kennel. That’s 4 jumps (she is 5’ 2” tall) over her shoulder in a matter of 10-15 seconds. He does this every day.

Lonster, I can deal with high energy. I guess my main reservations are having them around family. Are they super protective? Are they territorial with other dogs? I’ve researched it and I can’t seem to get a clear understanding of it. So my idea of a high energy family dog is one that I don’t have to worry about biting everyone or other dogs. A working dog that I have to keep separate from others is what I don’t want.

My three have three different attitudes.
Protective? Yes. My adult loves children and will accompany them everywhere they go. I wouldn’t try to get between him and a child or make him think that you are harming one.
My 11 month old. I NEVER trust him. He is QUICK and very athletic. He hasn’t bit anyone yet.
My 9 week old doesn’t like any stranger. She growls and barks at them and doesn’t want them to touch her, we are working on socializing her now. Took her to Lowe’s twice, she discovered that not every human is the same color, those that are darker seem to get growled and barked at.
Get you a Mal and go with it. I can’t tell you what you’ll get and probably nobody else can. Expect a high prey drive, and borderline uncontrollable dog at times. Extremely intelligent. Mine are all pretty soft when it comes to discipline, usually a stern voice is enough but that’s NOT when their prey drive has kicked in, that is VERY hard to control.
Here is some food for thought: I can put my older dog in the front seat of my truck and leave the window rolled down, nobody will stick their arm in the window or try to open the door. He will stay in the truck UNLESS a cat comes by.
I can leave my 11 month old in the trucK BUT I will have to leave the windows rolled up and when I return my seats will be shredded and the steering wheel will be chewed in half AND he just might bite me for leaving him in there.
I can leave my 9 week old in the truck and everything she can get her mouth on will be chewed up but she will be so happy to see me when I return.
