This has been a tough season for me. I may hunt this one, but I think I found him too late. I had another one about like this I saw last night but I'm not sure where either one spends most of their time. (fixed my there/their error).

Yeah, I think so too. But the best one I tried to get my kids on during youth season, but he didnt show. He then got shot in in almost the same tree we set up in a few weeks later. At least a good friend got him.

Dont be proud of me. We didnt get it. A buddy of mine shot it about 3 weeks after youth season. We only had two days, we knew where it liked to hang out, and I'm pretty sure I saw that it, but it was too far for both my 11 yr old and his 350 legend. Yeah, kids are tough. We had a decent buck come in on us in the rain, but my son got all caught up in his jacket and then was nervous and moved too quick. The deer was only 20 yards away and bolted. Lesson learned. He has killed two little bucks (his first) which is probably a better way to start anyway.

Others may disagree and can do as they want but I agree with your last statement. I don’t think it’s always the best idea to let kids shoot big deer consistently early on. By no means should you force them to pass on a big deer if it works out, but letting them ease into it I think helps keep them “hooked” long term

Well, my daughter(14yo) had an opportunity at a young buck the other day. 20yds and moving away. It went south every way it could. She ended up shooting at him over 100yds, missed, scoped herself, and has had two black eyes ever since. I screwed it up pretty good. Now she dont want to try it again this year. It couldnt have gone much worse. Kids are difficult, but im a terrible teacher sometimes

Hate that for her. But you'll laugh together someday about that memory.

I agree. But, maybe that is just because I shot so many scrub bucks when I was young. haha

I agree. When they start out killing big deer it sets a bad precedent. One, they need to kill deer and be proud of them for what they are. Two, when you set the bar real high initially it gives them nothing to look forward to or accomplish in the future. And last, if they don’t have to truly work for a nice deer they don’t grow up understanding that good things are worth working hard to get. Now with all that said, I let my boys shoot whatever they wanted for their first deer and then we started working up. Both have killed really good deer at young ages too, but it’s just how it worked out. I hope they realize what they accomplished with their bigger deer and don’t take it for granted. I think they do, but time will tell.
